GED in North Carolina (NC): Program Overviews

In order to pass the GED in North Carolina (NC) and earn a diploma credential, test-takers must score at least 2,250 total points, with a minimum of 410 on each individual subject test. Many students elect to take GED preparation classes before taking the exam. Central Piedmont Community College and Guilford Technical Community College are two schools offering GED preparation programs in North Carolina.

Central Piedmont Community College's GED Preparation Programs

With a student population of over 18,000, Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) has the largest student enrollment of any community college in North Carolina. CPCC is located in Charlotte, NC and offers GED preparation classes, as well as academic certificates and associate's degrees.

GED Connections on CPCC TV

Central Piedmont Community College offers a 39-episode GED training series through their CPCC TV program. The episodes air Monday through Friday at 7:00 PM for nine weeks, for a total of 39 episodes. The episodes are grouped into topics specific to each of the GED subject tests, which are writing, science, reading, social studies and mathematics. CPCC also offers a fast-track option, in which the topics are covered over one week, with each day devoted to one of the five subjects.

Guilford Technical Community College's GED Preparation Programs

Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC) is located in Jamestown, NC and enrolls over 11,000 students each year. GTCC offers over 70 certificate and degree programs through 11 departments. The college offers a free GED preparation course and online classes through the Basic Skills Department.

General Educational Development Program

This course prepares students for the GED exam by covering science, math, writing, reading and social studies skills. Courses are offered Monday through Friday during the day, as well as Monday through Thursday evenings. The class is free and students can borrow books for free or purchase them at the campus bookstore.

GED Online Program

The online program provides flexible GED preparation for students with busy schedules, work and family responsibilities or unreliable transportation. Students must have an email address, as well as access to a computer with Internet access. The online program covers all the same topics as the classroom-based program.
