GED in Rhode Island (RI): Information on the GED Exam

What Information is Available for the GED Exam in Rhode Island?
The General Educational Development (GED) exam in Rhode Island is administered by official testing centers authorized by the Board of Regents for Elementary and Secondary Education. The American Council on Education (ACE) hosts the GED Testing Service (GEDTS). The nearly 8-hour long test is composed of five sections, including writing skills (Part I and II), literature and the arts, science, mathematics and social studies. Preparatory classes are offered during the day and in the evening.
The test needed to earn a GED in RI includes both multiple-choice questions and a 45-minute, timed essay. Applicants may retest after approximately 6 months, or at the discretion of the chief examiner. While applicants must score at least 410 to pass a section, they must have an overall score of at least 2250 to pass the test and be awarded a GED in RI.
The test is offered in English and Spanish. Official testing centers are located in Newport, Warren, Lincoln, Providence, Cranston, Wakefield, Woonsocket and Warwick. Eligibility requirements vary between authorized testing centers.
The Rhode Island Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (www.ride.ri.gov) is an excellent resource for finding information on the GED examination. The Office of Adult and Career and Technical Education is located on the department website and provides a wealth of relevant information to those looking to earn the GED. The department offers support services, which helps students continue learning without interruption. Services include access to childcare, transportation, counseling and housing.
Preparing for the GED Exam
Students can prepare for the GED exam through online learning programs, independent study or GED preparation classes. Testing guides are available at bookstores. Libraries often have books on the GED exam. GED preparation classes are a valuable way for students to learn about the exam and gain a sense of what will be covered in the exam. These classes may also allow students the opportunity to take practice GED tests in order to gauge their readiness for the actual exam. GED prep programs are offered at all locations listed above.
