GED in Ohio: Test Information and Requirements
The state of Ohio, like every state in the United States, allows adults to earn a General Educational Development (GED) certificate if they do not have a high school diploma. This article details information and requirements of the GED in Ohio.
What are the Requirements for the Ohio GED?
Information regarding the Ohio GED test is available through the Ohio Department of Education (www.ode.state.oh.us). The GED test has five sections assessing the test-taker's knowledge of math, social studies, science, writing and reading. To earn a GED certificate, which is issued as an Ohio High School Equivalence Diploma, test-takers must have a total score of 2,250, with no one test section score less than 410.
Ohio GED Test Information
Career centers, community colleges and education service centers all over Ohio allow students to take practice tests and classes pertaining to the GED test. These centers help the test-takers with the application process and scheduling the test, assisting students with disabilities, test-taking strategies and classroom strategies.
Requirements
To take the GED test, a candidate must complete and submit a GED application to the Ohio GED office with payment. Test applicants may find out if they're approved to take the GED by contacting their local test center or checking through their online account with the Ohio Department of Education's website.
There are no academic requirements for taking the test, though GED candidates can take practice tests and study relevant information to prepare. Test-takers must be at least 19 years old and withdrawn from school. Some circumstances allow the test-taker to be under 19, with an age waiver form or additional documentation:
- Students who are 18 years old require a GED age waiver form signed by the superintendent of the last school attended, or an official school transcript attesting to the student's class' graduation.
- Test-takers who are 18 years old and signed up for military duty need a sworn statement giving the date of their swearing-in ceremony.
- Test-takers between the ages of 16 and 18 must have the age waiver form and a signed parental consent form.
