Golf Course Management Courses and Classes Overview
Golf course management programs combine studies of horticulture, management and business with classes about golfing and grounds operations. Many schools offer associate or bachelor's degrees in golf course management. Common courses found in these programs are outlined below.
Golf Course Operation and Management Overview Course
This course covers a wide variety of golf course management issues. Students learn how to keep records, manage employees, structure their time and attend to customers. Aspiring golf course managers learn about course procedures, pro shop operations and tee times. The course may also touch on basic methodologies for golf instructors.
Turfgrass Culture and Management
A large part of managing a golf course is keeping the grass healthy. Courses in turfgrass focus on the identification and maintenance of different types of turfgrasses such as warm and cool season species. Students learn about irrigation methods as well as the fertilization, mowing and renovation of golf course grounds. Some colleges may divide their turfgrass courses into additional courses dealing with irrigation systems and pest control.
This course provides instruction in the operation of golf tournaments. Curriculum covers rules and conventions surrounding different types of tournaments. Often, students will have the opportunity to design and oversee a golf tournament, learning about handicapping systems and other aspects of the game. Students will learn how to promote a golf course and how an effective marketing campaign can improve a golf course's success.
Golf Club Fitting and Repair
This course covers the repair and alteration of golf clubs. Topics covered include the construction and maintenance of golf clubs and the ways in which these factors affect the flight of the golf ball. Students are provided with hands-on experience in club repair and alteration. A section on setting up a golf club repair and custom design lab may also be part of the curriculum.
