List of Good Journalism Schools for Becoming a Journalist
The best journalism schools are those where classes are taught by respected and well-known journalists. These schools offer bachelor's, master's and doctoral degree programs, along with many opportunities to get hands-on journalism experience.
What Are Some Prestigious Journalism Schools?
Journalists are professionals who research and report the news. They interview and write articles or produce the news for television or radio. Journalism has many specialties from broadcast journalism, which focuses on the reporting and broadcasting of the news, usually in electronic means, to photojournalism, which is the use of photos and images in order to share a story.
The most reputable journalism schools are those with the most respected history and those with the most opportunities to offer to their students. The University of Missouri was the country's first journalism school, while Columbia University is the only journalism school in the Ivy League. Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism offers its students many opportunities in nearby downtown Chicago, as well as a program that begins by preparing high school students for their careers in journalism.
University of Missouri at Columbia
It was here, at the University of Missouri, more commonly known as Mizzou, where Walter Williams began the world's first journalism school in 1908. Missouri journalism students have the opportunity to study at the same campus where the Journalist's Creed was created, a statement of journalism and its morals.
Journalism students can participate in many professional organizations, including the Committee of Concerned Journalists, The Association of Health Care Journalists, Investigative Reporters and Editors and many more. Mizzou boasts a variety of journalism contests and awards programs, such as the College News Design Contest, the Missouri Photo Workshop, and the College Photographer of the Year, among others. These competitions offer students the chance to get their work seen by a wide variety of other students and professionals within their field.
Journalism students have opportunities to get real experience within their journalistic fields by participating in any number of student groups like the radio station, student-run newspapers and more.
