Second on the list of the largest graduate schools in Pittsburgh is the Indiana University of Pennsylvania's main campus. University of Pittsburgh - Pittsburgh Campus
Founded in 1787 as the Pittsburgh Academy, the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) has evolved from a small private school into a 4-year public university system with five campus locations. The main campus, located on 132 acres in Pittsburgh, is the largest school in the city to offer graduate programs. Regional campuses are also located in Titusville, Greensburg, Bradford and Johnstown. In 2010, U.S. News and World Report ranked Pitt 56th among a list of the best national universities. Pitt employs 3,800 full-time faculty members, who lead undergraduate and graduate programs through 15 different schools and colleges.
Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business
The University of Pittsburgh Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business (Pitt Business) offers several master's and doctoral degree programs for students interested in a career in business. Degrees offered include a Master of Science in Accounting, a Master of Business Administration (MBA), an Executive MBA and a Ph.D. program with several options for areas of study.
Graduate School of Public and International Affairs
Pitt's Graduate School of Public and International Affairs (GSPIA) offers programs in public affairs, international development and international affairs. Three master's degree programs are offered through this school, each with three options for areas of concentration. At the doctoral level, graduate students can pursue a Doctor of Philosophy in Public and International Affairs.
School of Social Work
The University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work is ranked 14th among the best schools of its kind in the nation. Graduate School of Public Health
Founded in 1948, the Graduate School of Public Health (GSPH) at Pitt receives the third highest amount of National Institute of Health (NIH) funding. Graduate programs are offered through seven academic departments, including environmental and occupational health, health policy and management, human genetics and biostatistics. Degrees offered include a Master of Science in Epidemiology, a Master of Public Health in Behavioral and Community Health Sciences and a Ph.D. in Infectious Diseases and Microbiology.
School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences
This divisionk of Pitt offers both a Master of Science in Health and Rehabilitation Sciences and a Ph.D. in Rehabilitation Science. Additional graduate programs are offered in the areas of communication science and disorders, rehabilitation science and technology, sports medicine and nutrition, health information management, occupational therapy, physician assistant studies and physical therapy.
School of Medicine
The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine (Pitt Med) offers graduate and professional education through 28 different departments. In addition to an M.D. program, Pitt Med also offers several master's, doctoral and certificate programs. Degrees offered include a Master of Science in Biomedical Informatics, a Master of Science in Clinical Research and Ph.D. in Integrative Molecular Biology.
School of Nursing
In 2008, U.S. News and World Report ranked Pitt's School of Nursing seventh among the best graduate nursing programs in the nation. Founded in 1939, the Pitt School of Nursing offers undergraduate and graduate programs through three main academic departments, including health and community systems, health promotion and development and acute/tertiary care. Graduate degrees offered include a Master of Nursing and a Doctor of Nursing Practice, with several possible areas of concentration.
School of Pharmacy
The University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy consists of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and the Department of Pharmacy and Therapeutics. In addition to a full-time, 4-year professional program that leads to a Doctor of Pharmacy degree, Pitt also offers a Ph.D. program and several residency programs.
School of Dental Medicine
The School of Dental Medicine at Pitt offers undergraduate, graduate and professional programs for students interested in a career in dental medicine. At the graduate and professional level, students can pursue a Doctor of Dental Medicine, postgraduate programs in dental informatics and residency programs in over ten specialty areas.
School of Law
Founded in 1895, the University of Pittsburgh School of Law (Pitt Law) graduates more than 200 legal scholars every year. Pitt Law offers a broad range of graduate and professional programs, including a Master of Studies in Law and a Doctor of Jurisprudence. Additional graduate certificates, clinics and joint degrees are also offered at Pitt Law.
School of Education
In 2008, U.S. News and World Report named Pitt's School of Education one of the top graduate schools for education in the nation. A long list of graduate degrees are offered through five departments, including instruction and learning, administrative and policy studies, health and physical activity, psychology in education and the learning policy center. Graduate degrees offered include a Master of Education in Higher Education Management, a Master of Science in Health and Fitness and a Doctor of Education in Special Education.
Swanson School of Engineering
Established in 1846, the University of Pittsburgh's Swanson School of Engineering offers undergraduate and graduate programs through seven academic departments, including civil and environmental engineering, electrical engineering, engineering physics and bioengineering. In 2009, U.S. News and World Report ranked Pitt's graduate program in bioengineering 18th among the best programs in the nation.
School of Information Sciences
Students interested in a career in information sciences can pursue a graduate degree through Pitt's School of Information Sciences. Degrees offered include a Master of Science in Information Science and a Doctor of Philosophy in Information Science. A Certificate of Advanced Study is also offered to provide individualized study beyond the master's degree program in the areas of telecommunications and distributed systems, database and web, information security and geoinformatics.
School of Arts and Sciences
Pitt's School of Arts and Sciences is the largest school of its kind in the area. In addition to undergraduate majors, this school offers graduate programs with 34 concentrations, as well as graduate certificate programs. Degrees offered include a Master of Arts in Anthropology, a Master of Science in Computer Engineering and a Ph.D. in Psychology.
