How to Select a Heating and Air Conditioning School

Heating and air conditioning programs are available as heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC) degrees. Students interested in these programs need to make sure the school is accredited. The HVAC degree should be accredited by either HVAC Excellence, the National Center for Construction Education and Research or the Partnership for Air-Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Accreditation.

Students also need to ensure the proper classes are available. The curriculum must include heating and air conditioning work and core liberal arts and business courses. Coursework should cover gas heating, commercial controls, electric heat, air conditioning, troubleshooting systems, communications, math, sociology, society, health, management, sheet metal and professional ethics.

It's important for students to get real world experience in this trade during his or her schooling. Many schools offering HVAC programs also have apprenticeship programs available. An apprenticeship allows students to work full-time and earn a stipend. Apprenticeship programs can last several years, and students learn directly from contractors and union workers who have been involved in the business for many years.

Schools need to prepare students for HVAC licensure, which is required by many states. Test content often varies by state and locality, so the student should examine what their school's area requires.
