Heating and Cooling Training Programs in Michigan

Students who are interested in embarking on a career in heat, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) can choose from several schools in Michigan. Many of these schools offer both certificate and degree programs. The majority of schools students will explore are two-year community colleges and vocational training schools. HVAC contractors are required to obtain a Mechanical Contractor's License from the Michigan Department of Licensing and Affairs. Individuals seeking a license are required to have at least three years of professional experience.

Delta College

Located in University Center, Delta College offers a degree program as well as a handful of certificate programs for prospective HVAC professionals. Students interested in a comprehensive training program in HVAC technology can pursue an associate degree in HVAC service technology. This program trains students to diagnose and maintain heating systems, refrigeration systems and air conditioning systems. The program provides practical training in each area and students become certified to handle refrigerants after they complete their second year of courses.

Students that have an interest in training in a specific area of HVAC can also choose between three certificate programs offered at Delta College. The school offers training programs in heating, air conditioning and refrigeration. Students must complete between 24 and 36 credits in order to obtain their certificate. Each certificate curriculum also includes an opportunity for students to participate in a design technology internship.

Ferris State University

This university is located in Big Rapids and offers an associate degree program in HVACR technology that is designed for students who are interested in working as HVAC technicians. Courses include practical training opportunities in heating systems and commercial refrigeration. Students also study scientific understanding and micro-systems software.

The school also offers a bachelor's degree program in HVAC engineering technology. This program cultivates expertise in controls, systems, design and retrofitting. Courses cover load analysis, secondary system design and commercial HVAC design. In addition to coursework, students in this program also perform system analysis functions for local industry and businesses.

Grand Rapids Community College

Grand Rapids Community College is located in Grand Rapids and offers a certificate program in HVAC as well as an associate degree program. The certificate program takes one year to complete and provides an overview of theory and practical training in the HVAC field. Credits that students earn in this program can be used toward an associate degree. The associate degree program is designed to help students prepare to install, design, manufacture and sell HVAC equipment. The program includes theoretical training as well as two lab courses per semester that allow students to sharpen their technical skills.

Henry Ford Community College

Located in Dearborn, Henry Ford Community College is another school that offers HVAC training opportunities. Here students will find an associate degree program devoted to the field. Students in this program take courses like introduction to energy, sheet metal fabrication and heating and cooling codes. The program also includes an energy management course.

Kalamazoo Valley Community College

Kalamazoo's Kalamazoo Valley Community College includes a certificate program that trains students to work on HVAC systems. This program features courses focused on heating system concepts, hydronic heat, oil burners and sheet metal layout. The curriculum is engineered to help students prepare for entry-level positions in the industry.

Lansing Community College

Lansing Community College in Lansing offers a handful of certificate and degree programs for students interested in HVAC technology. For students interested in certificates, the school offers a building maintenance curriculum and a heating and air conditioning curriculum. Although the building maintenance program is not specifically focused on HVAC, it includes courses in air conditioning, heating and HVAC fundamentals. The heating and air conditioning certificate hones in on HVAC technology and includes courses in HVAC piping and sheet metal fabrication.

Students who would like to obtain an associate degree can select between programs in heating and air conditioning and HVAC energy management engineering technology. The heating and air conditioning curriculum is similar to that of the certificate program with the addition of required general education courses. The energy management engineering technology program provides students with the knowledge needed to perform evaluations on commercial and industrial heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems.

Macomb Community College

Located in Warren, Macomb Community College offers several HVAC training options. The school features certificate programs in most aspects of HVAC technology. Depending on their interests, students can pursue a certificate in air conditioning, refrigeration and heating or a certificate that is focused on each individual component of HVAC technology. There is also a certificate for HVAC installation and service.

If students are looking for an associate degree in the field, Macomb offers a general climate control degree curriculum. This curriculum includes courses in duct layout, controls and introductory HVAC training. Students must complete 62 credit hours worth of courses to obtain the degree.

Mott Community College

Students in Flint will find a certificate program and an associate degree program in HVAC. These programs can be found at Mott Community College. Each program features courses that can help students obtain an entry-level HVAC job. Courses include system installation, heating systems, basic refrigeration and duct system fabrication. Each program also features courses in system design.

Oakland Community College

Located in Bloomfield Hills is Oakland Community College. This school offers a degree program in environmental systems technology, which may be of interest to aspiring HVAC professionals. Students can choose between concentrations designed to prepare them for technical work or advanced HVAC maintenance and analysis. Students will also find certificate programs in heating, air conditioning and refrigeration. The school also offers an alternative thermal systems certificate curriculum. This program includes courses in heat pump technology, energy management and HVAC controls.

Washtenaw Community College

Students will also find HVAC training in Ann Arbor. Here, Washtenaw Community College offers programs for prospective HVAC professionals, including an associate degree program and a handful of certificate programs. The school's associate degree program prepares students for entry-level management positions. Students may also decide to transfer their credits to a four-year institution. Classes in the program include residential and light commercial HVAC, soldering and brazing and energy audits. Students looking for certificate programs can choose a program based on the type of HVAC system they're interested in. Specifically, students will find curricula focused on industrial, commercial and residential HVAC.
