Programs in heavy equipment and transport technology aim to prepare graduates for entry-level employment. Some also prepare students for the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification examination. To qualify for the exam, students must be able to show evidence of both classroom study and work experience. A few programs also include internships, which may help students meet all such certification requirements.


Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College

Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College in Asheville offers degree, diploma and certificate programs in heavy equipment and transport technology. The 69-credit associate's degree program provides the basic skills and knowledge to operate, troubleshoot and repair medium- and heavy-duty vehicles such as forklifts, loaders and bulldozers. Graduates with the required work experience are eligible to take the ASE certification examination. The 48-credit diploma program focuses on diesel engine vehicles, such as heavy-duty trucks, buses, locomotives and ships. The 18-credit certificate program covers basic training in diesel engines, transportation electricity, preventive maintenance and brake systems.
