Schools and Programs

Training for prospective heavy equipment operators can often be found in community or technical colleges as well as universities. In New York, two postsecondary institutions provide this type of particular training and are discussed at length below. One school is located in upstate New York and the other in the western part of the state. Studies are most commonly found at the associate degree level. Students of these 2-year programs can learn everything from operating equipment to performing maintenance and conducting inspections. Programs often include hands-on learning experiences in labs or at on-site locations.

Alfred State College's Heavy Equipment Programs

Located in Western New York, Alfred State College prepares students for technical professions in building, construction, technology and automotive trades. This program is offered in Wellsville, at the school's applied technology campus.

Associate in Occupational Studies in Heavy Equipment Operation

An associate's degree program in heavy equipment operation teaches students how to operate a variety of heavy equipment vehicles, such as earth movers and paving equipment. The program is popular and enrollment is limited each semester. Students learn heavy equipment operation through hands-on labs and practice assignments at off-campus construction sites.

Associate in Occupational Studies in Heavy Equipment, Truck and Diesel Technician

Students interested in providing mechanical maintenance for heavy equipment vehicles can enroll in this technician program, which teaches students how to work on engines and fuel and brake systems in trucks, dozers, tractors and diesel-powered equipment. Students learn technical skills through mechanical labs and courses in vehicle safety and inspection, welding and preventative maintenance.
