Details about these schools and programs are found in the following article. Facts about each school are presented in a table at the bottom of this article.

  • Alfred State College offers two associate degrees in heavy equipment operation. These programs are offered at the school's applied technology campus in Wellsville, NY, about 15 miles from the main campus in Alfred.
  • SUNY Canton, located in upstate New York roughly 150 miles north of Albany, offers a related program in automotive technology that could train students to become heavy equipment mechanics.

Alfred State College

Located in Western New York, Alfred State College prepares students for technical professions in building, construction, technology and automotive trades.

Associate in Occupational Studies in Heavy Equipment Operation

An associate's degree program in heavy equipment operation teaches students how to operate a variety of heavy equipment vehicles, such as earth movers and paving equipment. The program is popular and enrollment is limited each semester. Students learn heavy equipment operation through hands-on labs and practice assignments at off-campus construction sites.

Associate in Occupational Studies in Heavy Equipment, Truck and Diesel Technician

Students interested in providing mechanical maintenance for heavy equipment vehicles can enroll in this technician program, which teaches students how to work on engines and fuel and brake systems in trucks, dozers, tractors and diesel-powered equipment. Students learn technical skills through mechanical labs and courses in vehicle safety and inspection, welding and preventative maintenance.

SUNY Canton

SUNY's campus in Canton is located in Northern New York, approximately 20 miles from the Canadian border. More than 3,000 students attend this college, which offers over 40 degree programs.

Associate of Applied Science in Automotive Technology

Students interested in heavy equipment vehicle maintenance can enroll in the automotive technology program. Although the program covers automotive maintenance for all types of vehicles, students can also learn maintenance and repair skills that can lead to careers in heavy equipment vehicle maintenance.

The 2-year program includes a variety of courses in engineering technology, including welding, electrical systems, braking systems, engine performance and diesel engines. With this degree, graduates may be able to find positions with heavy vehicle repair shops, construction companies and equipment rental agencies.
