Essential Information

There are over 40 public and private institutions of higher learning in Maine, a handful of which currently offer courses in heavy equipment training. Available programs lead to the award of certificates and associate's degrees in the field. Some programs are only available every other year and others require CPR and First Aid training and certification. All heavy equipment programs include hands-on training on a range of vehicles; associate's degree programs include general education coursework.

Eastern Maine Community College

Sitting on a 72-acre campus in Bangor, Eastern Maine Community College is a two-year public school with a student enrollment of approximately 1900. The school offers a diesel, truck and heavy equipment training program that provides students with classroom training and work experience in the servicing, testing, troubleshooting and engineering of diesel engines, trucks and heavy equipment. Students can choose between the 31-32.5-credit hour certificate program (offered only in odd-numbered years, such as 2013) or the 65-66.5-credit hour associate's degree program, which is offered annually and adds general education courses in speech communication and physics to the core heavy equipment courses. The program is certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence and prepares graduates with an understanding of industry regulations.

Northern Maine Community College

Presque Isle's Northern Maine Community College offers both an associate's degree and a certificate program in diesel hydraulics technology. Both programs train students in maintaining and repairing a wide variety of heavy equipment, including diesel cylinder heads, drive train systems and hydraulic systems. The school's certificate program is a two-semester course of study requiring 32 credits for completion and largely consists of diesel hydraulics core classes. The Associate in Applied Science degree is a four-semester program that requires at least 71 credit hours for completion and features many more general education courses.

Southern Maine Community College

Southern Maine Community College is one of the seven colleges in the Maine Community College System and is located in South Portland. The school's certificate program in heavy equipment operations trains potential machine operators in the use of earth-moving equipment, such as graders, backhoes, dozers and excavators. Students are able to train onsite at various locations and with high-tech simulators. Course topics in this program include electricity and electronics, construction safety, heavy equipment operations maintenance and service, principles of site finishing, grades and welding. A few general education courses are required as well.

Washington County Community College

Found on the border between the United States and Canada in Calais, Washington County Community College has a student population of approximately 500 people and offers certificates in heavy equipment maintenance and heavy equipment operations. Both programs require 32-34 credit hours for completion and train students in maintenance of drive train, running gear and hydraulic systems. The school also emphasizes proper safety training and requires students to complete training in First Aid and CPR.
