Essential Information

Heavy equipment training programs in New Jersey can prepare graduates for jobs as diesel engine mechanics or material moving and construction equipment operators. However, individuals interested in pursuing the latter option might need to meet licensure requirements after completing their training programs. Aspiring operators can find a select few heavy equipment training programs and courses as well as an apprenticeship in New Jersey.

Career Requirements

Crane operators in particular need to obtain state licensure. Requirements include certification through the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO). Applicants for this credential must be at least 18 years old, comply with the NCCCO's ethics code and substance abuse policy, successfully complete a series of written and practical exams and meet a series of physical requirements.

Operators responsible for hauling construction equipment used to perform work on public roads need to apply for a New Jersey commercial driver's license (CDL). This entails passing a vision test as well as written and road tests.

There are only about three institutions and/or organizations in the state of New Jersey that offer heavy equipment training. These options range from vocational schools to unions and are profiled below.

These options can prepare students to earn NCCCO certification and subsequent state licensure. Students can learn how to operate finish rollers as well.

Although there is no program that prepares students for New Jersey crane operator licensure or NCCCO certification, students can learn how to use global positioning system (GPS) and laser level technologies, read blueprints and locate underground utilities.
