There are a few options for heavy equipment training in New York. However, students can find certificate and associate's degree programs that offer classroom instruction and laboratory experiences.

Career Requirements

Those planning to drive heavy equipment must have a New York State commercial driver's license. State certification is required for heavy equipment inspectors and crane operators. Additionally, students can pursue assorted non-required certifications that could increase career potential. Alfred State SUNY College of Technology

Alfred State SUNY College of Technology is part of the SUNY (State University of New York) system and offers heavy equipment associate degree programs at the university's campuses in Alfred and Wellsville, the latter which is located about 15 miles from Alfred.

Students in the Heavy Equipment Truck and Diesel Technicians Associate of Occupational Studies (AOS) program in Alfred receive 1,800 hours in classroom and hands-on training. During the first year of this 72-credit program, learners take classes in truck diagnosis and tune-up, basic truck repair, and welding. The second year focuses on servicing bulldozers, tractors, earth movers, and other diesel equipment. Graduates of this technician program may be eligible to earn up to eight Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence, as well as inspection certification from the state of New York.

The AOS program in heavy equipment operations at the Wellsville campus teaches students how to operate equipment for light construction work and heavy highway projects. This 72-credit program covers such topics as safety, soils, earth moving, blueprint reading, equipment maintenance, paving, and supervision. Graduation from either of these programs can lead to transfer into a bachelor's degree program in technology management.

New York Institute of Technology

New York Institute of Technology is located in Old Westbury on Long Island and has a certificate program in heavy equipment operations offered through continuing education. Participants in this 84-hour certificate program are immersed in a real-life construction environment and learn about trenching, demolition, tree removal, blueprint reading, and how to drive heavy equipment on public roads.

Students learn to operate backhoes, excavators, payloaders, and bulldozers through four 21-hour modules. Students can choose to earn a certificate for just one of these particular vehicles by taking only the required module. Safety topics addressed include OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) construction industry regulations, federal motor carrier safety regulations, and falling object protective structures.
