Heavy Equipment Operation Schools in Georgia

In Georgia, there are nine schools that offer training in diesel equipment technology, which is a common phrase for heavy equipment operation. Each of the schools require that students be at least 16 years of age when they begin the diploma and certificate programs. Read about the different programs , their offerings and tuition information to make a decision about which is best for you.

Albany Technical College

Albany Technical College, located in Albany, offers several education options for individuals searching for heavy equipment operation education. Students can choose from a diploma In Diesel Equipment Technology with two specialization options: medium/heavy trucks or heavy equipment; and a Diesel Engine Service Technician Certificate. Both specializations in the diploma program require study of HVAC and engine systems as well as preventative maintenance for diesel engines, electrical systesm and study of tools and safety in the field. The medium/heavy truck specialization includes courses in brake systems, truck steering and suspension systems or truck drive trains, while the heavy equipment specialization requires two courses in heavy equipment hydraulics and off road drive trains.

Altamaha Technical College

Baxley's Altamaha Technical College campus offers two certificates of credit related to heavy equipment technician training - the Diesel Engine Service Technician certificate and the Diesel Electrical and Electronic Systems Technician certificate. Applicants must be 16 years of age and have a high school diploma or GED equivalent. The Diesel Engine service Technician Certificate requires 50 credit hours of instruction on the theory and diagnosis of diesel engines and heavy equipment. In the Diesel Electrical and Electronic Systems Technician Certificate, students learn about electrical and electronic systems in diesel-powered equipment and learn about safety related to heavy equipment. This certificate requires completion of 10 credit hours. The Diploma in Diesel Equipment Technology is a 48 credit hour program that includes courses in equipment safety, electronic and electrical systems, hydraulic systems and power train systems.

Athens Technical College

At Athens-based Athens Technical College, students can earn a Diploma in Diesel Equipment Technology or choose from two Technical Certificates of Credit in Diesel Electrical/Electronic Systems Technician or Diesel Engine Service Technician. In the diploma program, students take introductory courses in computers and diesel technology and tools. They also explore topics like preventative maintenance, diesel engines, HVAC systems for diesel trucks and heavy equipment, brake and drivetrain systems as well. The Diesel Electrical/Electrician Systems Technician Certificate requires that students take just two courses - an introduction to diesel technology, tools and safety and a study of electrical and electronic systems in diesel engines to complete 10 credit hours and earn the certificate. The Diesel Engine Service Technician Certificate requires completion of 17 credit hours, including both of the courses in the Diesel Electrical/Electrician Systems Technician Certificate, along with an additional class focusing on diesel engines.

Atlanta Technical College

Students at Atlanta's Atlanta Technical College can pursue a 50-credit hour Diploma in Diesel Equipment Technology and complete the program within two years. The program includes a focus on medium and heavy trucks, with courses in brake systems, drive trains, steering and suspension systems for those trucks. Other required courses include an introduction to computers, tools and safety in diesel equipment shops and the electronic and electrical systems in medium and heavy diesel trucks. Students can also choose from three technical certificates - Diesel Engine Service Technician, Diesel Electrical/Electronics Service Technician, or Diesel Truck Maintenance Technician. Each specialization has its own course requirements and requires between 10 and 25 credit hours to complete.

Chattahoochee Technical College

Marietta's Chattahoochee Technical College offers a Diploma in Diesel Electronic Technology which includes a choice between three specializations - medium/heavy trucks, heavy equipment or emergency power generation. These specializations require completion of 12-14 credit hours and each has its own course requirements. Regardless of their chosen specialization, students take the same core courses exploring use of and safety with tools in diesel engine work, how diesel engines work and maintenance of diesel engines.

Oconee Fall Line Technical College

The Dublin campus of Oconee Fall Line Technical College offers a 48-credit hour Diploma in Diesel Engine Technology. At the end of the diploma program, students are qualified to take ASE Student Certification Exams. Students can choose from four specializations - marine diesel engine systems, emergency power generation, heavy equipment or medium/heavy trucks. Each specialization requires a different set of courses, ranging from 12-14 credit hours.

South Georgia Technical College

At the Americus campus of South Georgia Technical College, students can pursue a Diploma in Diesel Equipment Technology that offers a choice between two specializations - Heavy equipment or medium and heavy trucks. The heavy equipment specialization includes study of off-road drive trains and hydraulics for heavy equipment; the medium and heavy truck specialization includes study of brake and drivetrain systems for heavy trucks as well as steering and suspension systems. Both specializations include study of safety measures and tool use for diesel equipment, electrical and electronic systems as well as an overview of diesel engines. Students can complete this program in four terms - or two years.

Southern Crescent Technical College

In Flint River, students at Southern Crescent Technical College can explore the field of diesel equipment technology and earn a Diploma in Diesel Equipment Technology after completion of 48-50 credit hours. The diploma program offers three specializations - medium/heavy trucks, heavy equipment or emergency power generation. Each specialization has its own course requirements, but students in all three take the same core courses exploring use of and safety with tools in diesel engine work, how diesel engines work and maintenance of diesel engines.

West Georgia Technical College

Waco-based West Georgia Technical College offers a Diploma in Diesel Equipment Technology or a professional Certificate in Heavy Diesel Service Technician. In the diploma program, students focus on heavy equipment and take courses in hydraulics for heavy equipment, preventative maintenance and electrical and electronic systems. The program requires completion of 48 credit hours. In the heavy diesel service technician professional certificate program, students learn about the theory, diagnosis and repair of diesel engines and equipment.
