List of Herbalist Schools, Colleges and Universities
Herbalists work in the natural health industry as teachers, writers, researchers and cultivators. Herbalists develop and encourage the use of medical treatments using plants. There are few herbalist schools in the United States.
Selecting an Herbalist School
When looking for an herbalist school, the student should make sure the curriculum combines science and an understanding of how plants can affect a person's well-being. There should be a particular focus on bridging the gap between modern science and traditional herbalism. Courses and topics of study should include disease prevention using medicinal herbs, herbal manufacturing, herb identification, herb cultivation, history of botanical medicine and sociopolitical perspectives in regards to botanical medicine.
The school should offer students the opportunity to cultivate medicinal herbs in a campus garden alongside other students of herbalism. The student should be taught to identify every herb in the garden, of which there may be hundreds. This provides excellent opportunities for students to build practical skills in herbalism.
The school should also be accredited. Accreditation is offered by the Council of Naturopathic Medical Education and local accreditation commissions. Schools offering herbalism as a field of study often have many natural health majors. These are often the best schools for students of herbalism because many of the degrees complement each other well, leading students to become well-rounded alternative medicine practitioners.
