Essential Information

Although there are no holistic nutrition programs in Kansas, there are nutrition and dietetics programs available at a few Kansas schools. Programs range from an associate degree in dietary management to a doctoral degree in medical nutrition science. Relevant certificate programs are also available. In many programs, students are able to complete practical experiences in the field. In addition, many dietetics programs will start graduates on the path to becoming licensed dietitians.

Career Requirements

To become licensed in the state of Kansas, students will need to earn a minimum of a bachelor's degree with coursework accredited or approved by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND), complete 900 hours of ACEND-accredited supervised dietetics work, and take and pass the Commission of Dietetic Registration test. Profiled below are the three available schools that offer nutrition programs in Kansas.


Barton Community College

Barton Community College (BCC) has a student body of roughly 5,000 students and is located in Great Bend. BCC offers an Associate of Science program that will fulfill the first two years of a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Dietetics program. Students can choose a pre-dietetics focus or a dietary management focus, depending on their career goals. This program will not prepare students for licensure; however, BCC does have a partnership with the Kansas State University BS in Dietetics. A dietary management certificate is also available, which consists of 16 credit hours including 120 hours of classroom instruction and 150 hours of fieldwork.

Kansas State University

Located in Manhattan, Kansas State University offers bachelor's, master's, and doctorates in a variety of nutrition fields through the College of Human Ecology. The dietetics department offers the Bachelor of Science (BS) in Dietetics program as a coordinated or didactic program. The coordinated program includes the coursework and 1,200 hours of supervised practice required by ACEND for attaining eligibility to take the national credentialing examination for becoming a registered dietitian. The didactic program can be completed on campus or online and prepares students for the post-bachelor's internship. Completion of the internship will allow students to take the exam for national credentialing to become registered dietitians.

The only department of its kind in Kansas, the Department of Human Nutrition offers undergraduate programs in nutritional sciences, nutrition and kinesiology, and public health nutrition. The three programs offered by the department all focus on the science of nutrition and are aimed at professional practice or graduate study. At the graduate level, students can find programs in nutritional sciences and public health nutrition.

University of Kansas

The University of Kansas offers graduate programs through the Department of Dietetics and Nutrition at the Medical Center Campus in Kansas City. Programs available include a Dietetic Internship Graduate Certificate, MS in Dietetics and Nutrition, and Ph.D. in Medical Nutrition Science. Bachelor's degrees are the prerequisite for all three programs, though a master's degree will give students a head start on the doctorate program.

The programs focus on both the social and scientific/health factors associated with nutrition and include courses centered on dietetics research, clinical nutrition, community nutrition, and other similar areas. Graduates of the internship may be eligible to become registered dietitians; however, those that complete the Ph.D. and MS program must meet the education guidelines and complete an internship program to become registered in Kansas.
