Home Health Aide Courses in NJ with Program Summaries
Research home health aide courses in New Jersey, which currently has two schools offering programs. Read an overview of degree programs, tuition info and program options for these schools and decide which program is right for you.
Only a couple of New Jersey community colleges offer homemaker home health care aide and nurse aide training courses. These include Camden County College and Mercer County Community. Students that successfully complete a training program that meets the standards set forth by the State of New Jersey are eligible to seek certification after passing the required examination.
Approved Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) programs require the completion of 90 hours of training that includes 50 hours of classroom lecture and 40 hours of clinical training within a long-term facility that is officially licensed with the state of New Jersey. Approved training for the Certified Homemaker Home Health Aide program requires 60 hours of classroom lecture as well as 16 hours of clinically based skills training. Each of the schools listed below that offer nurse aide training programs have been approved by the State of New Jersey Department of Health.
Camden County College
Camden County College (CCC) is a 2-year, public college with campus locations in Blackwood and Camden. It has achieved ranking among the top 50 schools within the nation for associate's degrees completed in nursing, health professions and clinical sciences. This school offers three programs relevant for someone wishing to become a home health aide.
CCC offers prospective students a nurse aide skills course that prepares students for positions within health care settings that include long-term care as well as home-based aide. The program provides instruction focusing on the areas of patient safety and rights as well as meeting personal needs on multiple levels, including social, spiritual and psychological. This is a basic-level skills course that does not lead to certification.
The CNA course offered by CCC uses the curriculum for nurse aide personnel specified by New Jersey's Department of Health. Students attend lectures, train in simulated laboratories and conduct supervised patient care in actual clinical settings. The 4-credit course includes 30 hours of classroom lecture, 30 hours of laboratory practice and 45 hours of clinical instruction. The program focuses on providing students with the skills necessary to work in long-term care facilities.
Homemaker home health aide training consists of a 1-credit, 15-hour lecture course that provides students with patient care and monitoring skills in preparation for taking the state Certified Homemaker Home Health Aide (CHHHA) exam. The course covers homemaking duties, including preparation and serving of meals, shopping, personal care and helping patients with daily tasks and activities.

Mercer County Community College
Mercer County Community College (MCCC) is a two-year, public school that offers a variety of programs at campus locations in Trenton and West Windsor. It offers both credit and non-credit courses, as well as degree programs. The school's Center for Continuing Studies offers training programs for students interested in becoming a nurse aide or homemaker home health aide.
The 90-hour CNA training program consists of 50 hours of classroom training and 40 hours of hands-on clinical training working with the elderly at a long-term care facility. Upon completion of the program, students have developed the necessary skills for taking the certification exam and becoming a CNA. Admission to the program includes passing a standard background check.
The 10-hour Certified Homemaker Home Health Aide program augments CNA training with the skills and information specific to the care of home-based patients. Candidates who complete the course and pass the state's CHHHA exam will be ready to work in entry-level positions in home health care. Admission to this training program is for students that have already achieved certification as a CNA.
