Home Health Aide Training School Options in Maryland
Prospective students looking for home health aide training in Maryland can find relevant certificate programs at Anne Arundel Community College and Allegany College of Maryland. While these programs prepare students to work as home health aides who travel to a patient's residence or work at facilities that don't provide Medicare or Medicaid services, the programs won't prepare graduates for state home health aide certification.
Only certified home health aides, who are also certified nursing assistants, can work at facilities that provide Medicaid or Medicare services. Both of the schools listed below prepare students for certification as geriatric nursing assistants, which is a separate certification option that isn't interchangeable with the home health aide certification.
Anne Arundel Community College
Located in Arnold, Maryland, Anne Arundel Community College offers home health aide classes through the school's Home Health Caregiver Certificate program. This program, which prepares students to work with geriatric patients in a patient's home, is offered through the School of Health Professions, Wellness and Physical Education.
The home health caregiver program is composed of six classes offered in 2-class units over the course of three terms. Subjects covered in the curriculum range from human services, such as the psychology and biology of aging, to classes in aging studies and home aiding. Students must also complete a human services practicum consisting of 120 hours of community fieldwork. After completing this home health aide program, graduates may take the exam to become certified geriatric nursing assistants in Maryland.
Allegany College of Maryland
Allegany College of Maryland (ACM) is based out of Cumberland, Maryland, and has additional campuses in Pennsylvania located within Bedford County and Somerset County. ACM offers a Nursing Assistant and Geriatric Aide Certificate program at the main Cumberland campus through its Allied Health and Wellness division.
Approved by the Maryland Board of Nursing, this certificate program requires 16 credit hours of coursework that cover health and wellness, CPR and first aid, patient care, medical terminology and nutrition. Graduates of the program are qualified to sit for the National Nurse Aide Assessment Exam and become certified geriatric nursing assistants.
