Home Health Aide Training in Michigan with School Options

Home Health Aide Schools in Michigan
Michigan does not operate a board of licensure or registration for home health aides (HHAs). This indicates that the state does not have specific training, licensure or registration requirements for these professionals.
Seven school in Michigan offer home health aide training programs. However, only two of these schools are public or not-for-profit institutions. This article focuses on these two schools.
Southwestern Michigan College
Located in Dowagiac, Southwestern Michigan College enrolls about 3,000 students. It offers a 19-credit-hour Home Health Aide Specialty Credential Program. Classes in this program cover topics like human biology, medical terminology, nursing assistance, workplace citizenship and diseases. The program also includes a 72-hour internship.
Mott Community College
Mott Community College is located in Flint and enrolls approximately 12,000 students. The school offers a Home Health Aide Training Program that includes 120 contact hours of instruction. Students in this program learn how to safely transfer patients, about basic personal care techniques and also develop communication skills. They additionally receive instruction in death and dying, developmental needs and basic infection control. Graduates are prepared to provide care to patients in homes and are eligible to sit for the home health aide certification exam offered by the National Association for Home Care and Hospice.
The school also offers a 24-contact-hour Bridges to Home Health Aide Training Program. This program is designed for certified nurse assistants seeking to work as home health aides. it includes instruction in understanding patient emotional needs, meal planning, food preparation and assisting with medication administration. Graduates are eligible to sit for the certification exam offered by the National Association for Home Care and Hospice
