In the State of New York, there are several home health aide (HHA) training programs offered at low or no cost through private home health care agencies or nursing homes; however, there are also programs approved by the New York State Department of Education that are offered through colleges in this state. There is a similar state-mandated curriculum offered in both types of programs, and both may lead to certification. Furthermore, some HHA training courses are offered in conjunction with personal care aid or certified nurse assistant training courses.
Typically, HHA training covers more than 80 hours of class-work and clinical experience and may be completed in as little as 2 weeks. The CNA/HHA course is a dual certification program that provides 128 hours of training, including 4 days of clinical practice and certification exams. Educational Opportunity Center of Westchester
The Educational Opportunity Center of Westchester is located in Yonkers. Mohawk Valley Community College

The HHA course at SCCC includes a 40-hour program that provides training for PCA certification and an additional 35-hour course to train for the expanded duties of an HHA. Clinical practice is also included in this program - students will be provided with 8 hours of training in an assisted living or home-care setting. CNA, PCA, and HHA training are available at this school as part of a project funded by Health Professions Opportunity Grants (HPOG), which aims to provide educational opportunities to low-income individuals seeking employment in the fields of health and human services. The limited nature of this grant requires that HPOG-eligible students be selected through a lottery system.
