Home Health Aide Training Programs in Long Island

There are several private agencies offering home health aide training programs approved by the New York Department of Health in Long Island, but there are only two not-for-profit colleges nearby that currently offer programs in this field. Though Long Island is traditionally comprised of Nassau and Suffolk counties, these two schools, in the Bronx and Queens, are located nearby. These two programs are offered at schools that are part of the City University of New York system and are approved by the New York Department of Education.

The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that minimal training is needed for a job as a home health aide (HHA). Typically, HHA certification includes more than 80 hours of training and should take about two weeks. Coursework in HHA programs covers patient care and communication, personal hygiene, and professional skills. Upon completion of a state-approved course, students will receive a certificate and are eligible to be placed on the New York state home health aide registry. Lehman College

Lehman College is located in Bronx, New York. There are more than 12,000 degree-seeking students at this school, which also offers a number of low-cost community education courses. The home health aide training course at Lehman College is comprised of 75 hours of in-class training and an additional eight hours of supervised clinical experience with patients. Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification is also required as a pre-requisite or co-requisite for HHA certification at this school. This course provides the basic training required by this state for working with patients in home-care settings or assisted living facilities.

Queensborough Community College

Queensborough Community College, a two-year community college, enrolls more than 16,000 students, and it is located in Bayside, New York. This school primarily offers certificates and associate degrees, but also has a comprehensive selection of professional development classes open to the local community. The 85-hour course in home health aide training includes eight hours of clinical experience, and it is offered through the continuing education department at Queensborough. Students will be offered training in how to perform at-home care for chronically ill, disabled, or elderly patients. Pre-requisites for the HHA training course include a high school diploma or GED and U.S. citizenship or legal working permits.
