Home Improvement Classes and Courses Overview
Home improvement courses are usually available as non-credit, standalone classes for personal enrichment. Some home improvement classes are offered through certificate, diploma or associate's degree programs in kitchen and bath design or interior decorating. Students can learn the basic principles of interior design, in addition to home improvement skills, such as hanging drywall, fixing plumbing issues, reupholstering furniture and laying tile.
Plumbing Repairs and Maintenance
This course provides students with the skills to perform plumbing maintenance tasks and handle common problems, such as leaky faucets and clogged drains. Students may practice soldering copper pipes or installing new faucets and toilets to improve the look and functionality of bathrooms and kitchens. Other home improvement skills covered in the course may include the installation of water heaters or garbage disposals.
Drywall Installation and Plaster Repair
Students in this class learn the basics of hanging different types of drywall and repairing plaster. The course focuses on how to complete projects from start to finish, including project planning, knocking down walls, hanging drywall safely, taping and sanding the material and trims. Repair techniques for plaster walls are also covered.
This course teaches students how to reupholster furniture by measuring, cutting and fitting fabric, in addition to inserting cushioning. Material selection and quality is also discussed, as well as tips to create a whole new look and feel with upholstery. Students are encouraged to bring in their own furniture for this class.
Ceramic Tile Installation
In this course, students learn how to choose the right ceramic tiles for specific surfaces, prepare the surface and install the tiles. Topics include tile installation for countertops, floors, shower walls, tubs and stairs. Students also learn how to estimate the quantity and cost of tiles needed for a project. The correct use of tools to create a finished, professional look is also covered.
Kitchen and Bathroom Design
This class teaches students how to draft blueprints to design renovation projects for their kitchens and bathrooms. Students learn how to decide what improvements are needed and determine the cost of the project. The course also focuses on modern design methods, as well as materials and fixtures used in bathrooms and kitchens, including sinks, tubs and lights.
