Miami Schools with Homeland Security Programs

Students interested in pursuing a career in homeland security have several options in the Miami metropolitan area. This article describes three schools, none more than a half-hour's drive from downtown, and the programs they offer. Important information about the schools, such as enrollment, tuition and the percentage of students who graduate on time, is presented in a table. At the end of the article is a listing of a few other area schools with homeland security programs.

  • The largest school with academic programs related to homeland security is Miami Dade College. Miami Dade boasts eight campus locations across the Miami area, including one less than a mile from downtown. It offers a criminal justice associate's degree program with homeland security classes as well as a certificate program in homeland security.
  • Florida International University offers a graduate certificate program in homeland security and emergency management. This school is about 14 miles from the city center.
  • Nova Southeastern University is in Fort Lauderdale, about 24 miles from downtown Miami. It offers a master's degree program in national security affairs with a concentration in homeland security and another master's program in disaster and emergency preparedness.

Miami Dade College

Miami Dade College (MDC) is a 4-year college, but primarily offers associate's degree and certificate programs. MDC's School of Justice offers programs in public safety, homeland security and criminal justice, including a certificate in homeland security and an associate's degree in criminal justice technology.

Homeland Security Certificate

The homeland security certificate is a 15-credit program with five required courses covering topics in constitutional law, human behavior, intelligence analysis and transportation and border security. Students can transfer credits earned in this certificate program to the A.S. in Criminal Justice Technology.

Associate in Science in Criminal Justice Technology

The Associate in Science (A.S.) in Criminal Justice Technology is a criminal justice program with homeland security electives. The associate's degree program prepares students for various careers in law enforcement. Program requirements include criminology, criminal behavior, constitutional law and criminal investigation. Electives in homeland security include border security, intelligence analysis and security management.

Florida International University

The School of International and Public Affairs at Florida International University is an interdisciplinary school that offers programs in the subjects of criminal justice, history, politics, global studies, religion, economics and public administration. The school's public administration programs include a graduate certificate in homeland security.

Graduate Certificate in Homeland Security and Emergency Management

This 18-credit graduate certificate in homeland security and emergency management includes courses in emergency management, homeland security management and homeland security risk assessment. Other courses available in the certificate program include the politics of disaster, terrorism and homeland security, global and human security and crisis management. In certain circumstances, certificate students accepted into the Master of Public Administration program at FIU may be able to apply credits from this certificate program toward their master's requirements.

Nova Southeastern University

The School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Nova Southeastern University offers an online master's program in national security affairs with a concentration in homeland security. The Institute for Disaster and Emergency Preparedness provides technical degrees in security and risk management with courses related to homeland security.

Master of Science in National Security Affairs

The Master of Science (M.S.) in National Security Affairs is an online, 33-credit master's program that utilizes an interdisciplinary approach to studying terrorism and national security. Students can choose from four concentration tracks, including cyber-terrorism and homeland security tracks. All concentration tracks require five core courses covering the subjects of terrorism and terrorists, national intelligence theory and practice, border protection, national security research and history. Students choose four additional courses from their selected concentration track. Homeland security courses include conflict and crisis management, critical incidents response, strategic community planning, metropolitan conflict, violence prevention, ethnopolitical conflicts and public policy planning.

Master of Science in Disaster and Emergency Preparedness

The M.S. in Disaster and Emergency Preparedness is offered through the Institute for Disaster and Emergency Preparedness at Nova Southeastern University's College of Osteopathic Medicine. The interdisciplinary program trains students to manage and prevent man-made disasters, such as terrorist attacks, and natural disasters, like hurricanes. There are four concentration tracks in this M.S. program: maritime safety, cyber security, law enforcement/criminal justice and public health. Students can specialize in one area by taking electives in a specific track. All students must take a biostatistics course and complete a field experience.
