Essential Information

Homeopathy is based on the theory that small amounts of substances can cure symptoms caused by larger amounts of the same substance. Individuals interested in becoming certified homeopathic practitioners can complete 3-year training programs and apply for certification from several organizations. Diploma programs are also offered in the area of homeopathy, but these are not usually sufficient to meet the certification requirements. These programs are offered through schools and sometimes are available online. Courses usually include anatomy, homeopathic law and homeotherapeutics. There may be a clinical requirement.

Persons practicing homeopathy must be licensed by their states, but requirements vary. Usually they include completing approved training programs and gaining experience in the field. Applicants generally must pass an exam.

Diploma in Homeopathy

Diploma programs in homeopathy are offered through some schools and online educational institutions. These programs are designed to provide students with an understanding of the basic concepts and techniques used in the practice of homeopathy. Diploma programs alone will not qualify individuals to meet the requirements for certification, but they can help a person incorporate homeopathic practice into their current field of practice or to work as homeopathic consultants.

Program Coursework

Courses in a diploma program will cover the basic concepts required in homeopathic practice, including the following:

  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Pathology
  • Homeopathic law
  • Homeopathic practices
  • Patient analysis

Continuing Education

The coursework completed in a diploma program may count towards the total hours of training required for certification. Graduates of diploma programs might receive additional training through continuing education opportunities, or might consider a 3-year certification preparation program.

Three-Year Program in Homeopathy

Those who want to practice professionally as certified homeopathic practitioners might consider a 3-year program which meets the training and clinical prerequisites for certification. Students learn to make and use homeopathic remedies to treat patients.

Program Coursework

The curriculum covers principles of homeopathy, preparation of homeopathic remedies and application of remedies. Some programs include a clinical training component. Courses might include:

  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Pathology
  • Principles of homeopathy
  • Materia medica
  • Homeotherapeutics

Licensing, Certification and Continuing Education

Licensing is granted by the state and requirements vary widely; those wishing to practice need to consult their state licensing boards. The Council for Homeopathic Certification (www.homeopathicdirectory.com) provides a basic certification for homeopathic practitioners. Applicants need to complete 500 hours of educational training, 250 clinical hours, 40 hours of training in pathology and disease, an approved course in anatomy and physiology and ten supervised cases before they are eligible to take the exam. The American Institute of Homeopathy's American Board of Homeotherapeutics (www.homeopathyusa.org) offers a certification for Medical Doctors (M.D.) or Doctors of Osteopathy (D.O.) who have completed homeopathic training, presented clinical cases and passed the exam.
