Comparison of Savannah Area Hospitality Management Schools

Aspiring hospitality management students have two options for education in the Savannah area. Savannah Technical College, located within the city about eight miles from downtown, offers a diploma program in hotel, restaurant and tourism management. Ogeechee Technical College offers degree, diploma and certificate programs, but it is located in Statesboro, which is a little more than 50 miles from downtown Savannah.

The diploma program in hotel/restaurant/tourism management at Savannah Technical College can be obtained with a specialization in hotel management or food/beverage management. Students gain both academic knowledge and occupational skills that can prepare them for several positions in the hospitality industry.

Hotel/Restaurant/Tourism Management Diploma

This program consists of 44 credit hours and requires four semesters to complete. Students must pass general education courses in math and English, as well as a course in professional development and interpersonal relations. The courses explore many facets of the hospitality industry, including food and beverage management, event planning, hotel operations and travel. Hospitality law and marketing are also course topics, and all students must complete an internship. Students must be at least 16 years old and hold a high school diploma or GED for admission into this program.

Programs at Ogeechee Technical Institute

Ogeechee Technical Institute's hospitality management programs require that students be at least 16 years old and earn a high school diploma or GED. Tuition and fee amounts vary depending on the program students choose.

AAS in Hotel/Restaurant/Tourism Management

Students in this AAS program must complete 15 credit hours of general education courses in areas including the humanities, math and social science. They must take 45 hours of occupational courses in topics like hospitality law, hospitality marketing and supervisory skills. Courses in food and beverage management, travel, event planning and hotel management are required, in addition to an internship. The degree program usually requires four semesters of study.

Hotel/Restaurant/Tourism Management Diploma

This program requires 44 credit hours and usually can be completed in four semesters. Students take basic skills courses in English, math and professional development. Students must also complete 36 hours of hospitality courses, such as event planning and hospitality law. An internship is required.

Event Coordinator Certificate

This certificate program prepares students for positions at hotels, country clubs, conference centers and resorts, among other places. The program consists of three classes in event planning, hospitality marketing and hospitality law. The program takes most students one semester to graduate.

Hospitality Operations Associate Certificate

Students pursuing this certificate must take four classes in hospitality management. The program includes an overview of the industry, as well as courses in food and beverage management, hospitality marketing and a hospitality elective. The program usually requires two semesters to complete.
