Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Schools in Alabama

Colleges in the state of Alabama offer EMT training at three levels: basic, advanced, or paramedic. Students can earn EMT certificates, advanced EMT certificates, paramedic certificates, or paramedic associate's degrees. After completing any of the programs listed below, graduates are eligible for certification through the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT), which is required in order to work in this state. Candidates must also submit an application that verifies they are current on Alabama patient care protocols and have a clean criminal record.

Bevill State Community College

At the Bevill State Community College campus in Sumiton, students can pursue a ten-credit EMT certificate, a ten-credit advanced EMT certificate, a 50-credit paramedic certificate, or a 74-credit paramedic associate's degree. The school's campuses in Fayette and Hamilton offer the EMT and advanced EMT certificate programs as well. The EMT certificate program includes EMT theory courses, labs, and clinical requirements. The paramedic certificate and paramedic associate's programs cover topics in patient assessment and management, paramedic leadership, trauma management, and paramedic practice.

Gadsden State Community College

Gadsden State Community College is located in Gadsden and has three EMT programs. Students can earn an EMT certificate, an advanced EMT certificate, or a paramedic associate's degree. The EMT certificate program can be completed in one semester, while the advanced EMT certificate and paramedic associate's degree take four semesters to earn.

George C. Wallace Community College - Dothan

The Dothan campus of George C. Wallace Community College offers four EMT programs. The EMT certificate and advanced EMT certificate programs are both ten credits and include two courses. The paramedic certificate is 66 credits, and the associate's degree is 76 credits. Courses in these programs include paramedic operations, cardiology, patient assessment, pharmacology, medical emergencies, and trauma management.

George C. Wallace Community College - Hanceville

Students at the Hanceville campus of George C. Wallace Community College can choose from several EMT programs. The EMT certificate and advanced EMT certificate both take one semester to earn. Students can earn the paramedic certificate in three semesters and the associate's degree in five semesters. The two EMT certificate programs require that students complete two courses, while the paramedic programs consist of courses, clinical requirements, and field experiences.

James H. Faulkner State Community College

James H. Faulkner State Community College sits in Bay Minette and has four EMT programs. Students can earn an EMT certificate and an advanced EMT certificate. The 60-credit paramedic certificate program and 70-credit associate's program can both be completed in four semesters. Students in the paramedic programs are required to complete theoretical courses, lab work, and clinical requirements. Courses cover topics in patient assessment, pharmacology, paramedic operations, and trauma management.

Jefferson State Community College

Three EMT programs are available through Jefferson State Community College at its campuses in Birmingham and Hoover. The EMT certificate can be earned in one semester; the advanced EMT certificate requires that students complete a second semester of training. Students interested in paramedic training must enroll in the school's associate's program, which includes paramedic coursework, clinical requirements, and general education classes. Students in the associate's program may also earn an advanced paramedic certificate with the approval of the school.

John C. Calhoun State Community College

John C. Calhoun State Community College is located in Tanner and offers four EMT programs. Both the EMT certificate and the advanced EMT certificate program can be completed during the day or evening. Applicants to the paramedic certificate and associate's degree programs must have earned advanced EMT licensure before enrolling.

Lawson State Community College

Lawson State Community College is situated in Birmingham and offers an EMT certificate. The program consists of 13 credits spread over three courses. These courses include EMT theory and lab sessions and clinical competencies; EMS decision-making skills are covered as well.

Southern Union State Community College

Southern Union State Community College offers four EMT programs at its Opelika campus. Classes are occasionally available at the school's Wadley and Valley campuses as well. The EMT certificate program consists of ten credits and is required for students who want to pursue the advanced EMT certificate. The advanced EMT certificate program features three courses, including a clinical requirement.

The paramedic certificate and associate's degree programs are both five semesters; however, the certificate program consists of 60 credits, and the degree program includes 73 credits. Students in these programs are required to complete 885 clock hours of paramedic coursework, labs, and clinical experiences.

University of South Alabama

Located in Mobile, the University of South Alabama offers students the opportunity to pursue certificates at all three EMT levels and a bachelor's degree in emergency medical services. After completing each EMT certificate program, graduates are eligible for the related licensure examination.

The 129-credit bachelor's program in emergency medical services is designed for licensed paramedics. Students are required to complete internships, and course topics include EMS research, EMS law and legal issues, disaster management, EMS administration, and EMS trends.
