Located just outside of downtown Tucson, Pima Community College is the only not-for-profit school in the area that has HVAC programs. Programs at Pima Community College

Pima Community College offers a variety of career-training and transfer programs. In addition to concepts learned in class, its HVAC courses provide hands-on training through supplementary laboratory components. Students who complete the Advanced Building and Construction Technologies Certificate program can continue their education by transferring credit hours to the building and construction technologies associate's degree program.

Advanced Building and Construction Technologies Certificate with a Concentration in Facilities Maintenance or HVAC-R

A total of 33 credit hours are needed to complete this program. Core courses cover basic safety and rigging, hand and power tools, blueprint reading, construction mathematics and related professionalism. The facilities maintenance concentration features courses in basic residential and industrial HVAC concepts, equipment maintenance, soldering, brazing and electrical work.

The HVAC-R concentration offers courses in HVAC basics, equipment maintenance, soldering and brazing. This concentration also requires an additional HVAC course that covers topics in commercial airside systems, alternating currents, leak detection, vents, chimneys and flues.

Associate of Applied Science in Building and Construction Technologies with a Concentration in Facilities Maintenance or HVAC-R

Students can expect to complete the same core courses found in the related certificate program. Both concentrations cover HVAC basics, commercial airside systems, heat transfer, metering devices and energy-saving devices. The facilities maintenance concentration also provides training in brazing, electrical work, equipment maintenance, plumbing and carpentry. Students enrolled in the facilities maintenance program need to complete 61 credit hours of coursework to graduate.

Topics covered during the HVAC-R concentration include heating and cooling systems design, refrigeration systems, troubleshooting techniques, hydronic systems, compressors, related electronic controls and water treatment. In order to graduate from the HVAC-R concentration, students need to complete 65 credit hours of coursework.
