HVAC Technology Programs in Maryland

Individuals interested in working as HVAC or HVAC-R (heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration) technicians generally need to complete formal training programs. To work as an HVAC contractor in Maryland, the candidate must pass a contractor's license examination through the Maryland Board of Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Contractors and have a certain number of hours of work experience in this field. The amount of training and work experience required varies by the type of HVAC license required (journeyman, limited, master restricted and master). HVAC technicians who have complete formal training may be eligible to take certification exams through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) or North American Technician Excellence (NATE). Maryland has seven colleges that offer HVAC training programs that prepare students to take licensing and certification exams and seek work as HVAC technicians.

Anne Arundel Community College

Anne Arundel Community College (AACC) in Arnold offers an HVACR training program that includes 16 lecture/lab courses each lasting six weeks in duration. Students attend classes three times a week and learn to install, repair and maintain commercial and residential HVACR systems. Upon completion of all courses, students are eligible to take the EPA certification exams and the NATE certification exam. AACC has an online course that can help prepare students to take the NATE exam. Applicants to this program must be at least 17 years old and have high school diplomas or equivalent. The college co-sponsors four-year apprenticeships with the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC). The apprenticeship provides the student with 144 hours of classroom training and at least 2,000 hours of on-the-job training.

Carroll Community College

Westminster-based Carroll Community College has a heating, ventilation and air conditioning program that prepares students to work as HVAC technicians. The 90-hour training program teaches students how to install, repair and maintain HVAC systems, while also focusing on tools and equipment used by HVAC technicians. The refrigerant handling certification exam is included in the curriculum. The Career Development Center at Carroll Community College provides students with individual counseling, career advisement, workshops and resume writing assistance.

Cecil College

Located in North East, Cecil College offers HVAC/R training through its continuing education division. The training consists of three courses: intro to heating and ventilation, air conditioning I and air conditioning II. The 12-session introductory course provides an overview or residential and commercial HVAC systems, including installing, servicing and repair systems. Topics of study include conduction of heat, energy concepts, duct design, gas furnaces and electrical systems. The air conditioning I and II courses both consist of 10 sessions, each 30 hours long. Upon completion of these courses, students are prepared to take the EPA 608 and 410A certification exams.

College of Southern Maryland

College of Southern Maryland is located in La Plata and offers HVAC training programs that prepare students to work in the heating, ventilation and air conditioning industry. The HVAC helper program, offered during the day and evening, teaches students to assist HVAC mechanics in the installation and servicing of HVAC systems. The day track (10 weeks) is three courses totaling 235 hours; the night version (two semesters long) is also three courses and totals 225 hours. The apprenticeship training program builds on what students learned in the helper program and consists of six courses, each 75 hours in duration. The college also offers journeyman exam preparation training.

Montgomery College

Montgomery College, located in Rockville offers a 22-credit hour HVAC program that is aimed at individuals who want to start careers working on HVAC systems or those who want to advance their skills in this industry. Students learn about air conditioning and heat pump systems, HVAC electricity, blueprint reading and the basics of refrigeration. The 10-credit hour program HVAC letter of recognition program at Montgomery College helps students develop skills in the HVAC field. The program consists of three courses; students must demonstrate skills in areas such as electrical controls, soldering and brazing, refrigeration systems and refrigerants. Montgomery College has a Student Services division that offers tutoring, career counseling, assessments, work study programs and internship information.

Prince George's Community College

Located in Largo, Prince George's Community College (PGCC) offers an HVAC/R program at the Westphalia Training Center in Upper Marlboro and the Skilled Trades Center in Camp Springs. The 350-hour certificate program includes a two-part HVAC/R level I course and a four-part HVAC/R level II course. The level I courses are a total of 36 sessions and the level II courses consist of 52 sessions. Students who have completed the training can take NATE certification exams at PGCC. PGCC also offers a course that prepares students to take the EPA 608 certification exam.

The Community College of Baltimore County

The Community College of Baltimore County in Baltimore has HVAC energy technology training that's offered as a certificate or an associate degree program. Students wishing to earn the degree complete HVAC required courses, general education courses and sufficient HVAC electives to meet the degree requirements of 62-63 credits. Course topics include HVAC safety, tools and methods, basic and advanced HVAC electricity, technical blueprints and schematics, residential systems and introduction to engineering technology. Students also complete the EPA refrigerant course and certification test. The 16-credit certificate program consists of five courses related to HVAC and energy technology. New students must take the orientation course Transitioning to College.
