Heating, venting, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC) training programs are usually 2-year associate degree programs with courses in commercial refrigeration systems, residential gas heat, fundamentals of air conditioning and work safety practices. HVAC service technicians troubleshoot, repair and maintain HVAC systems.

HVAC Training

HVAC stands for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), sheet metal workers are sometimes called HVAC technicians. Sheet metal workers learn their trade through on-the-job training, apprenticeships or by attending community colleges or vocational or trade schools. HVAC installers and mechanics can find training programs in trade and technical schools or community colleges. HVAC Excellence, NCCER and PHARA accredit programs. There are also apprenticeship programs (running three to five years) available to mechanics and installers. Lastly, some workers are trained on-the-job. There are number of tests and certifications available to HVAC workers that test their basic competency in the field. Obtaining certification will help an individual to advance.
