New York City-Area Schools Offering HVAC Training
Several schools in the New York City area offer HVAC training programs, usually including refrigeration training as well. This article looks at three of those institutions, none more than 55 minutes from the city center, and the programs available. Certification for HVAC technicians is available through a variety of professional organizations, including the Air-Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute or the Refrigeration Service Engineers Society. Typically, individuals seeking certification must have completed relevant coursework and work experience requirements in order to sit for the certifying examinations. So, while postsecondary programs are useful in working towards certification, additional requirements must typically be met.
- CUNY's New York City College of Technology (City Tech) offers HVAC training through several certificate programs as well as an associate's degree program in environmental control technology. This school is in Brooklyn, approximately two miles from downtown New York City.
- Suffolk County Community College (SCCC) teaches HVAC courses at its Michael J. Grant campus in Brentwood, about 42 miles from downtown New York City. This school offers both a certificate and an A.A.S. degree in HVAC/R.
- Raritan Valley Community College (RVCC) offers an associate's degree in environmental control technology at its Bridgewater, NJ, campus about 43 miles from New York City.

Building Housing Superintendent Technology Certificate
The building housing superintendent technology certificate requires the completion of 21 credits of coursework. Instruction is provided focusing on HVAC systems graphics, air conditioning and refrigeration principles and students also complete several lab courses.
Associate of Applied Science in Environmental Control Technology
The A.A.S. in Environmental Control Technology program provides HVAC training through both classroom and laboratory work. Laboratory courses are a required part of the associate's degree program curriculum, covering areas such as air conditioning systems, heating systems and refrigeration. The program also includes instruction in HVAC system graphics, HVAC systems controls and HVAC cost estimating.
In addition to the HVAC courses, students complete required general education courses in English composition, math, physics, literature, social science and communications. The A.A.S. program typically takes two years to complete and consists of 60 credits.
Suffolk County Community College (SCCC)
Suffolk County Community College is a 2-year public school with 3 campus locations situated on Long Island.
