Comparison of HVAC Training Options in the New York City Area

CUNY's New York City College of Technology (City Tech) is a public school that offers heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) training in Brooklyn. City Tech offers HVAC training through several certificate programs as well as an associate's degree program in environmental control technology. Suffolk County Community College (SCCC) is another option for prospective students seeking HVAC training programs. SCCC's Michael J. Grant campus in Brentwood offers both a certificate and an A.A.S. degree in heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC/R). Raritan Valley Community College ( RVCC) offers an additional HVAC training program for prospective students to consider. RVCC administers a 2-year degree program at its Bridgewater, NJ campus that is located about 42 miles from New York City. Each college administers a variety of financial aid programs including traditional federal student loan programs and Pell Grants as well as scholarship programs.

Certification for HVAC technicians is available through a variety of professional organizations, including the Air-Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute or the Refrigeration Service Engineers Society. Typically, individuals seeking certification must have completed relevant coursework and work experience requirements in order to sit for the certifying examinations. So, while postsecondary programs are useful in working towards certification, additional requirements must typically be met.
