Texas requires that all heating ventilation air conditioning and refrigeration professionals are licensed to work on each type of air conditioning and refrigeration unit endorsed on their license related to a product of any size or capacity; the second license allows a professional to work on air conditioning and refrigeration systems or products with a limit on heating or cooling capacities. There are two endorsements that a professional may obtain - they must have at least one - either an environmental air conditioning endorsement or commercial refrigeration and process cooling or heating endorsement. Below is a summary of the 10 largest schools offering degree programs that lead allow one to work in the field.

Austin Community College District

Based in Austin, the Austin Community College District is composed of 10 campuses and 11 centers serving students in eight Texas counties. The 2-year college offers a Certificate in Heating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technology as well as an Associate of Applied Science in Heating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technology. The 2-semester certificate requires that students take courses in basic electricity for heating, air conditioning and ventilation, air conditioning controls, gas and electric heating and an internship that serves as a capstone course. The 65-67 credit-hour degree program requires completion of the same courses as the certificate, with the addition of courses in commercial and residential air conditioning, industrial air conditioning and design or residential air conditioning systems.

Central Texas College

In Killeen, students can opt for a variety of certificates related to heating, air conditioning and refrigeration, or the Heating Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Mechanic and Repair Associate of Applied Science. The associate degree consists of 68 credit-hours in courses like air conditioning control principles, air conditioning installation and startup, gas and electric heating and troubleshooting and study of residential air conditioning system design, or an internship. The school also offers certificates of completion in heating, air conditioning and refrigeration, commercial or residential heating air conditioning and refrigeration.

Eastfield College

Part of the Dallas Community College District, the Mesquite-based Eastfield College offers an Associate of Applied Science in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technology - Residential, or a residential air conditioning and refrigeration I and III certificates. Like other Texas schools, students explore electricity for HVAC, heat pumps, residential air conditioning system design and troubleshooting. This degree program requires completion of 61-69 credit hours. The Level I Technician certificate requires a minimum of 24 credit hours in classes like residential air conditioning, refrigeration and heat pumps. The Technician III Level II certificate is a 3-semester program requiring completion of 48-56 credit hours. The difference between the two certificates appears to be the requirement that students complete speech, math or composition courses.

El Paso Community College

The El Paso-based El Paso Community College is a 2-year public college that offers an Associate of Applied Science in Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning. This program requires that students attend courses in two summer sessions to complete the 64-credit hour program. Required courses include blueprint reading and sketching, commercial air conditioning and refrigeration. Students must also complete a cooperative education experience during their final semester to gain hands-on experience.

Houston Community College

The 17-credit hour Certificate in Basic Air Conditioning and Refrigeration is a single-semester program that includes courses in industrial math, refrigeration principles and residential air conditioning. The program also includes a preparation for EPA Recovery Certification as a capstone course. In the Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technology Certificate is a 3-semester program that includes the same courses as the basic air conditioning and refrigeration certificate, but requires additional coursework. In the second and third semesters, students learn about commercial refrigeration, heat pumps or air conditioning and refrigeration codes, air conditioning troubleshooting and residential air conditioning system design.

Lone Star College System

Lone Star College System (LSCS) is a 2-year public college with five campuses and ten centers servicing the Houston area. At the North Harris campus, LSCS offers three options for individuals interest in obtaining HVAC training, including a certificate program, an associate's degree program and a continuing education program. San Jacinto Community College

San Jacinto Community College, located in Pasadena_, offers a 61-credit hour Associate of Applied Science in Air Conditioning Technology, as well as two certificates. In the associate degree program, students must take a capstone course by completing a course in air conditioning and refrigeration codes or by completing an internship. Other required courses offered through the Craft Trades department include residential and commercial air conditioning, basic and advanced electricity, residential or commercial air conditioning system design. Available certificates include an Occupational Certificate in Air Conditioning Technology, which focuses on residential air conditioning and takes just one semester to complete the four courses. The Certificate of Technology in Air Conditioning Technology is a 2-semester program that includes a Heating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technician practicum or study of air conditioning and refrigeration codes as a capstone experience.
