Anoka-Ramsey Community College
Anoka-Ramsey Community College (ARCC) houses an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) in Accounting Practitioner program at its campuses in Cambridge and Coon Rapids. The AAS curriculum includes a mandatory course in corporate income tax that takes place online and addresses such topics as itemized deductions, special taxes, tax return preparation, and gross income tax exclusions. Upon completion of this program, students are eligible to take the Minnesota Registered Accounting Practitioner (RAP) test, after which they will need an additional year of professional experience to become an RAP.
At Century College in White Bear Lake, students can find a taxation course in the diploma and AAS programs in accounting. The 45-credit diploma program encompasses study in economics, communication, and payroll procedures, while the AAS program requires additional coursework in areas like business finance, technological applications, and general education disciplines. The federal income tax course incorporated into both curricula covers subjects including tax policy, exemptions, and deductions, as well as tax software and income tax return completion.
Metropolitan State University
The Minneapolis, Midway and St. Paul campuses all offer a bachelor's degree program in accounting that incorporates two income tax classes. The first class, which is in business taxation, examines planning options, income and expenses, income tax structure, and taxation in property transactions. The second course is available as an elective and deals with individual rather than business tax planning.
Minnesota State University - Mankato
The Mankato campus of this school awards both a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Accounting and a Master of Accounting. In the bachelor's degree program, students take a class in the taxation of businesses, as well as an individual tax course that covers federal income tax computation, gift taxes, and estate taxation, among other topics. Though MSU Mankato undergraduates may also earn a minor in accounting, taxation courses are not part of the minor curriculum. The graduate accounting program includes mandatory classes in controllership and tax research, along with an elective option addressing the taxation of pass-through entities. Graduate students may also complete an internship for program credit.
North Hennepin Community College
Brooklyn Park-based North Hennepin Community College (NHCC) confers certificates in general and small business accounting, as well as an associate degree in accounting technology. All three programs either require or offer a course in small business income taxation that incorporates instruction in federal and state tax rules, small business tax data interpretation, and income tax reporting mandates.
St. Cloud State University
The undergraduate accounting program at this school in St. Cloud requires two courses in taxation. The personal tax class incorporates study in trust and estate taxes, while the business taxation course deals with income taxes for partnerships and corporations. Accounting students can earn credit by pursuing a professional internship. There's also a student accounting club that routinely presents professional guest speakers.
University of Minnesota - Duluth
In Duluth, the University of Minnesota offers a bachelor's degree program and a minor in accounting. In the Bachelor of Accounting program, students complete a personal income tax course, in which they receive instruction in tax concepts, planning, and reporting, as well as financial decision making in the context of taxes. This course is optional for students earning a minor in accounting.
Accounting majors may also elect to take a course in business taxation that addresses online tax resources and other tax research information. Bachelor's degree students must complete at least one field experience, such as partaking in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, which involves helping low-income individuals complete their tax returns.
University of Minnesota - Twin Cities
Based in Minneapolis, this university has undergraduate and graduate courses in income taxation that are available through the school's undergraduate accounting programs and graduate program in taxation. The accounting track of the bachelor's degree program in business incorporates a mandatory class in federal income tax basics, with coursework in Internal Revenue Code structure, tax research, and tax law. For students pursuing the minor in accounting, this course may be selected as an elective. An elective course in business tax that covers such subjects as tax regulations for limited liability companies and corporations is also available to accounting majors.
The university has a Master of Business Taxation program that comprises study in areas like international taxation, local and state taxes, taxes on property transactions, and tax accounting periods. Graduate students in the university's Master of Accountancy program can acquire a concentration in tax by taking a minimum number of tax courses offered in the Master of Business Taxation program.
University of St. Thomas
Located in St. Paul, the University of St. Thomas (UST) offers bachelor's and master's programs in accounting that include tax classes. The undergraduate accounting program requires the completion of a course in tax accounting, in which students learn about partnership, proprietorship, and corporate taxation, as well as principles of tax research.
In addition, an optional class in personal income tax addresses subjects like itemized deductions, cost recovery, filing status, and gross income. The Master of Science (MS) program in accountancy, taught by eight faculty members, requires a course on tax reporting and strategy. UST also has a student accounting club that focuses on networking and professional development.
