Indiana Paramedic Schools

The completion of an approved paramedic program along with the passing of written and practical examinations are necessary requirements to be a state licensed paramedic in Indiana. To enroll in a paramedic program, students must first become emergency medical responders, then become emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and finally become advanced EMTs. Each of these professional levels requires the completion of the appropriate examinations and educational programs. Although there are numerous professional organizations and hospitals that offer paramedic programs in Indiana, there are only 3 schools that offer paramedic training which all meet the necessary licensing requirements.

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis

Found in Indianapolis, the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis has a degree program that results in an Associate of Science in Paramedic Science. The first year of the program is spent completing the necessary requirements to enter into the second year of the program. This includes taking courses on EMT-basic, psychology, sociology, English, communications and biology or anatomy and physiology. In the second year of the program, students can take classes on cardiology, contemporary emergency medical services issues, medical matters and pulmonology.

Ivy Tech Community College

The Associate of Science in Paramedic Science degree program at Ivy Tech Community College in Indianapolis is 66.5 credits in length at the minimum. In addition to this central Indiana campus, there are 10 other campuses associated with Ivy Tech Community College where students can take this paramedic program. The program is normally completed over the span of 6 semesters and offers several medical and clinical courses. There are also classes on trauma, special considerations, operations, pharmacology, patient assessment and airway management. At the end of the program, an internship experience with an ambulance must be taken.

Vincennes University

At Vincennes University in Vincennes, students can pursue a program for a Certificate of Program Completion in Emergency Medical Services/Paramedic or for an Associate of Science in Emergency Medical Services. The certificate program is 31 credit hours in length while the associate's degree program is 68 credit hours. The two programs have similar coursework; the major difference between them is that a general education is offered in the associate's degree program. Students can expect to take several courses in paramedic clinical education and paramedic pre-hospital care. The internship requirements in these programs requires students to spend time riding in an ambulance and working at a hospital.
