An instrumentation engineering degree program teaches students basic engineering principles to operate and maintain automated systems and instruments used in a wide range of industries. While instrumentation engineering is a popular area of study outside the United States, degree programs in this particular subject are rare offerings among educational institutions in the U.S.

The small number of U.S. colleges and universities providing degree programs in instrumentation engineering generally offer only 4-year degree programs. The 4-year programs result in a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) or a Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) degree in instrumentation engineering or instrumentation engineering technology.

Education Prerequisites

It is suggested that students wishing to enter a degree program in instrumentation engineering take some basic courses in mathematics and science prior to enrollment. Courses in computers and engineering are also helpful.
