Journalism students learn mass communication theories and gain real-world experience in writing and reporting. They can focus on print, broadcast and other multimedia forms of journalism. The Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC) accredits more than 100 programs.

1. Pennsylvania State University in University Park
Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) was founded in 1855 as an agricultural school in central Pennsylvania. In 1914, journalism classes were first offered at the school, and the Department of Journalism was founded in 1930. Penn State has been accredited by the ACEJMC since 1974. Undergraduate journalism students at PSU must select a visual communication, broadcast journalism or print journalism track within the major. Penn State also offers a focused specialty for students interested in sports journalism. U.S. News and World Report ranked Penn State within the top 50 national universities and as the 13th-best public school in 2012.
2. University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in Champaign
The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) is located in central Illinois. In 2010, The Wall Street Journal surveyed the nation's top recruiters about which schools had the best graduates entering the workforce, and UIUC ranked third on that list. The school was ranked among the top 50 national universities by U.S. News and World Report in 2012. Students within the school's Department of Journalism choose among three majors: broadcast journalism, news-editorial journalism or general journalism. The school also offers a master's degree in journalism that takes 12-16 months to complete.
3. University of Texas at Austin
In 1883, the University of Texas at Austin (UT) opened its doors. Now it has an undergraduate population of more than 38,000 students. In 2012, U.S. News and World Report counted UT as one of the top 50 national universities. UT's School of Journalism was founded in 1914 and currently allows students to choose among four undergraduate areas of concentration: print journalism, broadcast journalism, multimedia journalism and photojournalism. The school also offers an extension of classes that make up a sports journalism track. The alumni of UT's College of Communication, which houses the School of Journalism, lay claim to 20 Pulitzer Prize awards. The School of Journalism also offers a master's and a doctoral degree for graduate students.
