Programs at Metropolitan Community College - Penn Valley

Metropolitan Community College - Penn Valley works in conjunction with Johnson County Community College to offer various interior design programs. Alternative interior design certification options here include merchandising entrepreneurship, interior design retail sales and manufacturers and interior products sales representative.

Associate of Applied Science in Interior Design

The general education requirements for this program are completed at Metropolitan Community College while the major requirements are taken at Johnson County Community College. Business communications, art history, business mathematics, composing and reading, physical education and economics make up the general education requirements. The major itself requires two internships along with a seminar on procedures and practices. Interior design specific coursework focuses on leadership in design, lighting design and planning, residential design and window treatments.

Interior Design Advanced Certificate

This advanced certificate option is intended for students who already have an associate's degree in interior design. The program requires 21 credits. The specific requirements of the program consist of classes on interior design issues, commercial design, intermediate CAD, interior textiles and planning and design for kitchen and bath. Students also choose from the following electives: 20th century designers, advanced floral design, elements of floral design and accessory fundamentals.

Degree at Park University

Upon graduation of the interior design program here, students can qualify for the NCIDQ licensing examination.

Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design

The senior seminar requirements for the bachelor's degree program in interior design consist of two classes for the thesis, project and portfolio. Advanced interior design courses in this program go over professional practice and building construction systems. There are also several studios on office design, furniture design, visual communications and drawing systems. The history requirements for the program are broken up into two courses. One covers antiquity to middle 19th century while the other one picks up from the middle 19th century to the present.

Degree at Johnson County Community College

In addition to the standard interior design major, this school also offers degree options in interior merchandising and interior entrepreneurship.

Associate of Applied Science in Interior Design

To graduate from this associate's degree program, a minimum of two internships have to be completed in order for student's to advance in creative, technical and business aspects of interior design. Asian rugs and carpets, history of Asian furniture and design, case goods and upholstered furniture are all classes typically completed in the fourth semester of the program. Before then, students learn about budgeting and estimating, professional selling, business communications, design presentation and space planning. Other courses of interest that students might consider pursuing here include elements of floral design, sustaining design, 20th century designers and accessory fundamentals.
