Land Surveyor Schools and Colleges in the U.S.

Land surveyors assess land to measure space and determine boundaries. They record this data for construction, exploration or digging purposes. Land surveyors who work for the government may collect this information for public record or to resolve property disputes. Colleges and universities across the U.S. offer degree and certificate programs in land surveying.

How to Select a Land Surveyor School

Individuals seeking to enroll in a land surveyor program need to look for a college or university that offers land surveyor programs accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). Graduating from an accredited program ensures that an individual is eligible for licensure in land surveying. Licensure is required by most states. Aspiring land surveyors need to look for an institution that offers at least a bachelor's degree in land surveying, which is generally a requisite for both employment and career advancement.

Additionally, it's important to take a land surveyor program that prepares students for the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) exams. After passing the first exam, Fundamentals of Surveying, the candidate works for four years under supervision and then sits for the second exam, Principles and Practice of Surveying.

Potential land surveyors may be interested in studying online. A program may offer some courses online, as well as on-campus. Degrees of this nature are called blended or hybrid programs.
