Language Schools in New Jersey with Course and Program Options
There are numerous educational opportunities for students interested in enrolling in a language school in the state of New Jersey. Rutgers University and Montclair State University both feature a number of language programs offered in a variety of degree formats.
Rutgers University Language Programs
Rutgers University is a 4-year, public university offering bachelor's and graduate degree programs. Founded in 1766, Rutgers is home to more than 36,000 students. Rutgers offers language studies in Korean, French, Russian, Hebrew, Latin and Spanish
Bachelor of Arts in Chinese
Rutgers offers an undergraduate major in Chinese through the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures. This 4-year degree program is designed to teach Chinese through classes that emphasize both culture and literature.
Bachelor of Arts in French
In addition to providing a thorough comprehension of the French language, this program also features coursework in French history, economics, linguistics and literature. Study abroad programs are available for students who want to spend a semester in Paris and immerse themselves in French culture.
Bachelor of Arts in German
The Department of Germanic, Russian and East European Languages and Literatures at Rutgers offers two paths to a bachelor's degree in German. The language and literature option teaches students language proficiency and instills a thorough understanding of Germanic culture and literature. The German studies option is an interdisciplinary program that allows the degree candidate to master both the German language and a non-language aspect of German culture or history.
Master of Art in Latin
The master's degree program in Latin is offered through the Rutgers Classics Department. Coursework emphasis is placed on the philological methods of Latin and the analysis of art history, literary theory and philosophy. This program can be completed in two years of full-time study.
Doctor of Philosophy in Italian
This Ph.D. program features a curriculum that thoroughly examines each period of Italian literature. Students focus on the pedagogical training component of doctoral study, which helps prepare the degree candidate to lead the classroom. Submitting and defending a doctoral thesis is a degree requirement.

Montclair State University Language Programs
Montclair State University, located only 14 miles from New York City, is a 4-year, public university that features a student body of over 17,000 students. In addition to individual classes in Hebrew and Arabic, Montclair offers certificate, undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Russian and French.
Certificate in Russian
Montclair State University offers a Russian certificate program for certified teachers who want to teach Russian in the New Jersey K-12 school system. To be admitted to this program, applicants must demonstrate a proficiency in Russian grammar and syntax and be familiar with Russian literature and civilization. Upon completing this 1-2 year program, individuals receive state teacher certification and are eligible to teach Russian in the New Jersey public school system.
Bachelor of Art in French
This undergraduate degree program is offered with a variety of concentrations. Degree candidates choose either a translating and interpreting program or a French civilization program. There is also a teacher education program designed for those interested in teaching French at the K-12 grade levels. The French Department at Montclair also offers a study abroad program, which allows students to spend a semester in Nice, studying, learning and exploring French culture.
Master of Art in French
The master's degree program in French features a two-pronged coursework approach. Upon completion, degree candidates are prepared to sit for French teaching certification and are ready to pursue senior research positions in French language and culture. This degree program can also function as a pathway to studying French at the doctoral level. A graduate thesis is part of the graduation requirements.
