College of Southern Nevada's Adult Education Programs
The College of Southern Nevada is a 2-year college with three main campuses in the Las Vegas metropolitan region and additional learning centers throughout Southern Nevada. The Division of Workplace and Economic Development (DWED) was established in 2005 to provide adult training programs geared toward the needs of local business and industry, as well as adult education classes. Since its inception, the division has served over 65,000 adults with classes such as the following:
English as a Second Language (ESL)
Noncredit ESL classes are open to adults who wish to improve their English. Classes focus on development of the four major language modalities: speaking, listening, reading and writing.
General Educational Development (GED) Preparation
These classes for Las Vegas adults focus on the five subsections of the GED. Participants study reading strategies, writing, social studies, mathematics and science.
Job Search Skills
DWED offers job search workshops consisting of 25 hours of instruction in topics related to finding a job. Topics include conducting a computerized job search, professional appearance, interviewing skills, resume preparation and networking.
Computer Skills for the Workplace
In a computer lab setting, students learn basic computer terms and processes. Navigating the Windows operating system, sending and receiving email, using an Internet browser and creating Word documents are among the topics covered.
Welding
DWED offers 40-hour and 80-hour welding certification programs designed according to standards set by the American Welding Society. Graduates of the 40-hour program can become certified in metal inert gas (MIG) welding, and the 80-hour, 10-week program prepares graduates for certification in tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding.
