Welding Programs at College of Southern Nevada
The Department of Applied Technologies, which administers the welding program, offers over 30 certificate and degree programs that provide students with the skills needed to pursue positions in area industries. Students can attend programs full- or part-time.
Additional training in welding is available through the Division of Workforce and Economic Development. The division came into being in 2005 and works with area employers to develop training programs to meet employers' needs.
Certificate of Achievement in Welding Technology
Graduates of this certificate program can seek AWS Entry-Level Welder Certification. Students learn about common welding processes. They also take classes in blueprint interpretation and carbon arc-air, plasma and oxy/fuel cutting processes. Graduates should be able to look at a drawing or blueprint and cut and make the parts illustrated, keep welding equipment in good working order and make proper welds in all positions.
Associate of Applied Science in Welding Technology
This associate's degree program is a continuation of the certificate program. Students receive instruction in shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), gas metal arc welding (GMAW), fabrication, welding codes and pipe welding. They also take 25 credits of general education courses. Graduates can seek certification as an AWS Advanced Level Welder.
Metal Inert Gas (MIG) Welding Certification
Students train in the classroom and in a lab where they get hands-on practice in MIG welding or GMAW. After finishing the program, graduates are eligible to take the certification test to become a Certified MIG Welder.
Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) Welding Certification
Individuals who enroll in this 80-hour training program learn about gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), also called TIG welding. Students complete hands-on labs and attend classroom lectures. Upon successful completion of the program, individuals are eligible to seek TIG welding certification.
