Field Profile: Legal Procedures
Adults may want to advance in the field of legal procedures for many reasons. Studying legal procedures may provide a person with the skills necessary to become a paralegal, a legal assistant, a court reporter, a secretary, or a lawyer. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, www.bls.gov, in 2002, employment for lawyers was one of fastest growing competitive job markets that caused growth in demand for any job openings in the legal field. Therefore, it is the quality of a lawyer's experience and geographic mobility that will be important in the success of a lawyer. Often schools offering legal courses, certifications, and degrees provide different concentrations within this field to establish a more specialized education. One might choose classes relating to paralegal studies, court reporting, or health law, for example. Such courses may provide students with the skills necessary to compete in a specific area of interest in the world of legal procedures and laws.
In order to enter a career as an attorney or in the legal arena, an individual should complete their undergraduate work. Undergrad degrees can vary from liberal studies to political science, history, or business. After earning a bachelor's degree or the equivalent certification, the law school entry level exam must be taken (the LSAT). This exam will permit an individual to apply to law school. Once entering law school, generally a three year program, the student can begin to decide which type of law interests them through taking various specialized courses. After completing law school and the proper internships, the state bar exam must be taken and passed in order to begin practicing law as a licensed attorney.
