Legal Transcription Schools and Colleges in the U.S.
Companies in insurance and law have a need for legal transcription professionals. Prospective students who wish to enter into this field have two training options to choose from, including a certificate in legal transcription and an associate's degree in legal transcription technology. Both programs are offered by community colleges and vocational schools throughout the United States.
How to Select a Legal Transcription School or College
Prospective students interested in a legal transcription career can choose to earn a certificate program or an associate's degree program. A certificate can be completed in as little as one year of full-time study. Certificate programs appeal to prospective students who want to learn the fundamentals of legal transcription in a short period of time. Unlike an associate's degree program in the field that includes additional studies on other topics closely associated with legal transcription, a certificate program offers little in the way of additional subject areas.
In contrast, an associate's degree in legal transcription technology prepares graduates for a range of career options. An associate's degree takes two years to complete. Associate's degree holders will be able to compete for legal transcription positions as well as jobs as shorthand court reporters, legal secretaries, television closed captionists and office transcription assistants. Some of the core courses found in each training program include court reporting theory, English and editing for transcription, computer-aided transcription, legal dictionary building and basic dictionary building. Additionally, a student enrolled in an associate's degree program in legal transcription technology will have to complete courses in word processing and typing.
Students in an associate's degree program may have the opportunity to complete an internship while enrolled. An internship offers students a chance to gain real-world legal transcription service experience working at a law firm or in a local courtroom. Many potential employers prefer applicants who have completed an internship.
