Major Florida Universities

The five largest Florida universities of higher learning offer both undergraduate and graduate programs and are 4-year, public institutions. The schools are located in cities ranging from northern Tallahassee to southern Miami and are each a part of the State University System of Florida, overseen by the State of Florida Board of Governors. They are listed in order of largest to smallest.

University of Central Florida in Orlando

The University of Central Florida (UCF) was founded as the Florida Technological University in 1963. Its main campus is located on more than 1,400 acres in Orlando, and the school also operates nine other campuses around Central Florida. More than 600 acres of UCF's campus is dedicated to an arboretum, woods and a lake. UCF offers more than 200 degree programs through 12 colleges in areas such as engineering, business administration, medicine, nursing, computer science, education and graduate studies.

University of Florida in Gainesville

The University of Florida (UF), founded in 1853, is a public research university. It belongs to the Association of American Universities and has more than 16 colleges offering over 100 undergrad majors and about 250 graduate programs. This Florida school is situated on a 2,000-acre campus in Gainesville, and it has more than 900 buildings, one of which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Florida International University in Miami

Florida International University (FIU), founded in 1972, is the first and only public 4-year institution in Miami-Dade County. Almost 50,000 students are currently enrolled. The school offers over 200 programs through several degree-granting colleges, including the new Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine. The campus of FIU is highly diverse, with no one ethnicity composing more than 61% of the student population.

University of South Florida in Tampa

The University of South Florida (USF), established in 1956, has its main campus located in Tampa and enrolls more than 40,000 students each year. USF has two other separately accredited universities: USF St. Petersburg and USF Sarasota-Manatee. The University of South Florida's 14 colleges offer more than 200 degree programs. It has been classified by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as a very high research activity school. USF is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Florida State University in Tallahassee

Florida State University is located in Tallahassee and is the one of the oldest public universities in Florida. Initially called the West Florida Seminary, it welcomed its first class of students in 1857. Florida State is classified as an extensive doctoral/research university by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. More than 275 programs are offered through its 16 colleges. Overseas study programs are also available in Italy, Panama, Spain and England.
