Nursing Schools in the Long Island Area

To work as a professional or registered nurse (RN), individuals must have a minimum of an associate degree in nursing from an approved institution. Licensed Practical Nurses are required to complete a minimum of a 9-month program. Students must also successfully complete the appropriate National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX), either for Registered Nurses or Practical Nurses.

In the Suffolk and Nassau counties of the Long Island area, there are at least eight public or private not-for-profit schools that include education programs for nursing. All of these schools are recognized by the NY State Education Department. Read below to learn about the requirements and tuition information at these schools to make an informed decision.

Adelphi University

Garden City's Adelphi University offers a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) with multiple pathways, a Master of Science in Nursing in multiple concentrations and a Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing. In the traditional BSN pathway, students take four years to complete required courses in nursing informatics, patient assessment and treatment of patients at all stages of life. Pharmacology, community health nursing and evidence-based practice are also required courses. Another option is the RN-BSN, which is designed for registered nurses who wish to obtain a bachelor's degree. This 2-year degree program requires completion of courses in nursing research, client education and assessment of families, groups and communities.

The Master of Science in Nursing is available for nursing administration, adult/geriatric nurse practitioner or nursing education. Each concentration requires its own courses, but all MSN students must complete a capstone project and a comprehensive examination.

A Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing is available for individuals who wish to become nurse educators. This program is available in full- or part-time formats and requires students to pass a comprehensive exam to become doctoral candidates. Preparation and defense of a dissertation is also required.

Farmingdale State College

Based in Farmingdale, this 4-year public college offers a Bachelor of Science in Nursing with multiple pathways. To enter the traditional BSN, students must take the National League for Nursing (NLN) PAX-RN exam and complete an interview. Required course topics include foundations of nursing practice, health assessment and care for individuals with a variety of health issues. The advance standing BSN is a 3-year degree program that builds on specific prerequisite high school and college courses; this track includes the same courses as the traditional BSN as well as courses in clinical pharmacology and nursing advocacy. Farmingdale's advanced standing RN-BSN program requires at least two years. It includes courses in the art of nursing, a senior leadership practicum and a course in community nursing; the latter two requirements include six hours of clinical experience.

Long Island University - C W Post Campus

Brookville's C.W. Post campus of Long Island University offers an RN-BSN degree program designed for working registered nurses who wish to obtain a bachelor's degree. Required courses include nursing research, health assessments and pathophysiology. To enter this program, students must have an associate degree in nursing and a valid New York state nursing license.

At the graduate level, students can pursue a Master of Science in Nursing with a family nurse practitioner concentration or a nursing education concentration. The family nurse practitioner concentration includes courses in nursing leadership as well as diagnosis and management. Students must complete two family nurse practitioner practicum sessions over two semesters. The nursing education concentration requires completion of a research proposal, courses in curriculum development and 360 clock hours in teaching practicum sessions. The college also offers two post-masters certificates: an Advanced Certificate in Family Nurse Practitioner or an Advanced Certificate in Nursing Education. Each has its own requirements, but both require that individuals have a Master of Science in Nursing.

Molloy College

Located in Rockville Centre, Molloy College offers three undergraduate paths to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing: a traditional Bachelor of Science in Nursing, an accelerated RN to BSN degree program or an LPN to BSN degree program. The traditional BSN includes courses in professional practices, caring for patients across the lifespan and the transition to professional nursing. The RN-BSN degree program follows the same educational program as the traditional BSN, but students may get credit for clinical practice.

At the graduate level, students can pursue a Master of Science in Nursing with four nurse practitioner concentrations. Each has its own requirements, but common courses include those in organizational theory, issues in professional nursing and advanced theory nursing. The school also offers a Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing. Students complete 51 credits in research, leadership, theory and elective categories. Students must complete a dissertation seminar then create and defend their doctoral dissertation.

Nassau Community College

Students at Garden City's Nassau Community College can pursue an Associate in Science in Nursing. The 70-credit-hour degree program can be completed in two years, including one summer session. Throughout this degree program, students learn about the profession of nursing, the skills needed to work as a medical surgical nurse and how to care for patients of all ages. The program includes 22 credit hours in a hospital or clinical setting.

New York Institute of Technology

At this 4-year, private not-for-profit school's campus in Old Westbury, students can enroll in the School of Health Professions to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. The New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) curriculum includes 49 credits in nursing courses that cover patient assessments, pharmacology, community nursing and leadership. A nursing capstone course calls for students to work in groups to research an issue or trend in nursing; students also complete a 15-hour clinical project under the supervision of a faculty member. Courses in life and behavioral sciences are also required.

Stony Brook University

Stony Brook's 4-year public university offers nursing degrees at all levels. From the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or RN-BSN degree program to the Master of Science in Nursing with five nurse practitioner specialties and the Doctor of Nursing Practice, the Stony Brook School of Nursing has programs to fit a variety of needs. The BSN program is designed for individuals who already have earned an associate's degree or diploma in nursing and been certified as registered nurses. The 2-year curriculum concentrates on upper division courses and is classified as an RN to BSN program. Classroom and clinical courses are available in nursing research, computer applications, family and community health practice, pharmacology, epidemiology, health assessment and nursing management.

The MSN degree program is open to licensed registered nurses who hold a bachelor's degree in nursing. This program presents the opportunity for nurses to become certified as nurse practitioners or clinical nurse specialists in primary, acute and critical care. The 45-credit program offers courses in statistical methods, theory and role development for advanced nursing, family intervention theory, clinical pathobiology, pharmacology, nursing research and adult health nursing. The school also offers post-master's advanced certificates in multiple nurse practitioner specialties, nurse midwifery or nursing education.

The Doctor of Nursing Practice is a 42-credit program open to registered nurses with master's degrees. Applicants must also have national certification as advanced nurse practitioners and at least one year of relevant work experience in their chosen specialty. Although there are ten specified days of required on-site residency, most of the 18-month program can be completed through distance learning courses. Courses include a research seminar, biostatistics, global health and social justice, epidemiology, ethics, genomics and healthcare policy. A clinical residency requirement of 540 real hours is completed in four sections and distributed over the length of the program.

Suffolk County Community College

Selden's Suffolk County Community College offers an Associate of Applied Science in Nursing with a day- or night-time schedule, an advanced placement LPN to RN degree program, or a Practical Nursing Certificate.

Students can complete the A.A.S. in Nursing in two years of daytime studies or three years of evening study. Students take courses in nursing for patients across the lifespan and health assessments. They gain clinical experience in caring for children and obstetric patients, among others. The LPN to RN degree program is a 2-year program that includes a course to prepare for the transition from practical nursing to registered nursing, as well as courses that teach students to care for patients as a whole, not just to treat specific symptoms. Students learn about medication dosage and development across the lifespan.

The Practical Nursing Certificate is a 1-year program that includes 27 credit hours in nursing-specific courses; graduates are eligible to take the NCLEX-PN exam to become licensed practical nurses (LPNs). This certificate program is only available for daytime study.
