Long Island University - Brooklyn Campus: School Overview

Long Island University was established in 1926 by the New York State Education Department. The 4-year, private school is now comprised of six campuses, including the original one in Brooklyn, New York. The Brooklyn campus offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate degree programs in a number of fields, including political science, social work, art, psychology and biology.

What Types of Programs are Available at Long Island University's Brooklyn Campus?

Six departments make up the schools and colleges at Long Island University's Brooklyn campus. Their disciplines include liberal arts and sciences, pharmacy and health sciences, health professions, nursing, education and business. The Brooklyn location is among New York's most quickly growing and diverse campuses in the state.

Undergraduate and Graduate Programs

The Brooklyn Campus at Long Island University has more than 160 certificate, undergraduate and graduate programs in multiple fields, such as business administration, computer science, modern languages, accounting, English, education and chemistry. Dual-degree programs are available to students interested in earning two degrees simultaneously; these options are limited to certain subjects. A Doctor of Pharmacy can be earned through the school's professional program, and it is the highest level offered at the Brooklyn campus.

Continuing Studies and Online Programs

Students interested in advancing their education or personal interests have many options through the continuing studies school. The courses are frequently available during evenings and weekends, which allows working adults to balance their education with work. Some course topics include health careers, corporate training, legal studies, fine arts and ceramics.

The online division allows courses to be completed off-campus. The course materials can be accessed at any time, and the same information is found in the on-campus counterparts. Technical requirements include having access to an IBM-compatible PC or Mac computer with an Internet connection.

Study Abroad Programs

Study abroad programs are offered through the university's global college, where enrolled students earn a Bachelor of Arts in Global Studies. Students choose three regions of the world to focus on, and their options are China, Costa Rica, India and Australia. Individuals complete independent study and fieldwork abroad and develop cross-cultural skills. Students have the flexibility to study in two locations during their second and third years. During their fourth year, students return to Long Island University's Brooklyn campus to work on research projects and write theses based upon their experiences.
