LPN Programs in Connecticut
Connecticut licenses practical nurses through its Department of Public Health, which requires that they complete an education program of at least ten months. Practical nursing licensing applicants must pass the National Council of State Boards of Nursing Licensing Examination-PN (NCLEX-PN). Below are details about 10 of the largest schools in Connecticut that offer LPN programs. All of these programs qualify graduates for the NCLEX-PN and meet state licensing requirements.
Connecticut Technical High School System (CTHSS)
The public technical school system in Connecticut - where adults and high school students take courses - offers an LPN training program for adults at six technical high schools: Albert I. Prince in Hartford, Bullard-Havens in Bridgeport, Eli Whitney in Hamden, Norwich in Norwich, Vinal in Middletown and W.F. Kaynor in Waterbury. This day program requires 18 months, and graduates are awarded a certificate of completion. Applicants must have their high school diplomas or GED certificates, pass nursing-program entrance exams and complete college-level courses in algebra and English composition. A criminal background check is required. In addition to theoretical courses, the program provides students with supervised clinical practice with real patients. The technical high schools' partnership with the Connecticut - Community College Nursing Program enables LPN program graduates to transition to a registered nurse (RN) training program.
Porter and Chester Institute
Porter and Chester Institute offers a practical nursing program at its Branford, Enfield, Rocky Hill, Stratford and Watertown campuses. During the four terms of study, students examine nursing theory, practice skills in on-campus laboratories and get hands-on experience in healthcare facilities. Classes and clinical work are in the daytime. Porter and Chester offers small classes that allow students to get individual attention from the instructors. Each campus has an employment office that helps graduates obtain work in the field.
Practical nursing programs are offered by Stone Academy - East Hartford in East Hartford and Stone Academy - Hamden in West Haven. Students can complete their studies in four semesters through a full-time day program or in six semesters with a part-time program offered in the evenings and on weekends. Students gain knowledge in many areas of nursing through classes as well as clinical experiences at area healthcare facilities.
