Maryland LPN Training Programs

Students interested in healthcare careers might look into the practical nursing programs offered at multiple schools throughout Maryland. Licensed practical nurse (LPN) programs are typically found at 2-year community colleges or vocational schools and result in a certificate or diploma. Some schools may also offer bridge programs that prepare current LPNs to become RNs (registered nurses). After completing these programs, students must pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN) before beginning work.

Two Maryland community colleges are highlighted in this article. Find information about coursework and other program requirements. Learn more details about these schools in the table at the bottom of this article.

  • Prince George's Community College offers two LPN programs. The college is situated about 40 miles south of downtown Baltimore.
  • At the College of Southern Maryland, students can earn a certificate in practical nursing. The school is located approximately 30 miles south of Washington, DC.

Prince George's Community College

Prince George's Community College (PGCC) is a 2-year, public college offering over 60 programs of study. Located in Largo, Maryland, PGCC offers various learning options, including certificate and degree programs, career and transfer programs and distance learning options. The nursing program at PGCC offers nursing programs for students interested in becoming LPNs and for current LPNs interested in becoming RNs.

Licensed Practical Nursing Program

This program prepares students for entry-level positions in hospitals, clinics or medical facilities as a practical nurse. The curriculum, which includes 2 semesters and summer studies, combines class assignments with lab work and clinical education. Upon successful completion of this 47-credit program, students are prepared to sit for the NCLEX-PN to earn licensure. Participants must complete prerequisite courses and submit to background checks before beginning the program.

LPN to RN Program

Licensed practical nurses interested in becoming registered nurses often choose the LPN to RN transition option. Students study courses in disease prevention and healthy living. This option is aimed at an individual who has earned his or her LPN certificate within the past 5 years and still holds a Maryland LPN license. Once students complete the prerequisite courses, they may enter the associate's degree registered nursing program as second-year students. A transition course is required if it's been more than 5 years since earning the LPN certificate.

College of Southern Maryland

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) is a public school offering a broad range of educational options, including certificate and associate's degree programs, as well as weekend and online classes. The school offers 3 campus locations and a student ratio of 20:1. The LPN program - one of several nursing programs at CSM - has been offered at the college for 34 years.

Practical Nursing Certificate

This program prepares students to take the NCLEX-PN to become licensed practical nurses. Students complete two semesters, as well as a summer session. Classroom lectures, lab work and supervised clinical education make up the curriculum for the LPN program. Topics of study include care of children and adults, mental health concerns and nursing trends and concepts. Prior to beginning the LPN program, the applicant must provide a record of a physical exam and vaccinations, along with CPR certification and proof of health insurance.
