Schools and Training Programs

LPN studies in NY are typically found at 2-year colleges. Programs for practical nurses are at the certificate level and can take 1-2 years to complete. Lectures and labs are usually accompanied by clinical field experiences in professional settings such as hospitals, nursing homes and community healthcare facilities. In addition to learning techniques for working with adults, children and pregnant women, students can expect to take courses that will teach them how to:

  • Assist in surgery
  • Treat wounds
  • Administer medication
  • Assess patients
  • Process clinical documentation

Other required courses would include anatomy and psychology. Graduates of these types of programs are eligible to sit for the NCLEX-PN (National Council Licensing Examination for Practical Nurses).
