NY Schools with LPN Programs
LPN programs in New York are typically found at 2-year colleges in New York City, Long Island and upstate New York. Programs are at the certificate level and can take 1-2 years to complete. Lectures and labs are usually accompanied by clinical field experiences in professional settings, such as hospitals, nursing homes and community healthcare facilities. Students can expect to learn techniques for a wide array of nursing responsibilities, from patient assessment to surgical assistance. Graduates of these types of programs are eligible to sit for the NCLEX-PN (National Council Licensing Examination for Practical Nurses).

- Suffolk County Community College's School of Nursing provides a certificate program in practical nursing. The college is located in the Long Island town of Farmingville, about 55 miles east of downtown New York City.
- CUNY LaGuardia Community College is another Long Island-based school offering a practical nursing certificate. This college, part of the City University of New York (CUNY) system, is found in the Borough of Queens and is only about 6 miles from NYC's downtown area.
Suffolk County Community College
Suffolk County Community College is a public postsecondary school offering three campus locations and more than 70 areas of study. Its School of Nursing hosts nursing programs at the certificate and associate's degree levels. These programs prepare students for careers as licensed practical nurses and registered nurses.
Practical Nursing Certificate
This 37-credit program helps students gain the knowledge to care for patients in various health care settings. It emphasizes patient assessment, patient documentation, care management, clinical decisionmaking, communication skills and professional behavior. Required coursework includes a survey of the human body, introductory psychology, pharmacology safety and adult nursing.
CUNY LaGuardia Community College
CUNY LaGuardia Community College is a 2-year public school with an enrollment of more than 19,000 students. Its health sciences department offers certificate and associate's degree programs in emergency medical services, veterinary technology, gerontology, mortuary science, human services, occupational therapy assistance and radiologic technology.
Practical Nursing Certificate
This 48-credit program covers medication administration and dosage, health counseling, nutrition and basic nursing skills. It consists of pre-clinical and clinical phases, the latter of which has its own competitive selection process. Course topics include human biology fundamentals, developmental psychology, mental health nursing, pharmacology, medical-surgical nursing, maternal-child nursing and pediatric nursing. Once they have obtained licensure, graduates can seek employment in settings offering acute and chronic health care services.
