Practical Nursing Certification Programs in New Jersey

Within the state of New York, multiple schools offer a Certificate in Practical Nursing (CPN) program. Practical nursing certification programs are designed to fulfill Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) licensure requirements for the New York State Education Department. Upon completion of a CPN program, individuals are eligible to take the National Licensure Examination in Practical Nursing (NCLEX-PN). Additionally, individuals may apply for licensure as a LPN in the state of New York. Read below for profiles of ten of the largest public and not-for-profit schools offering practical nursing certification programs.

CUNY Bronx Community College

Located in the Bronx, the college's CPN program is offered on evenings and weekends, and entails four semesters of coursework, including a summer semester. Upon completion of the CPN program, students are eligible to sit for the NCLEX-PN exam. Students may transfer up to 22 credits earned in the CPN program into the college's Registered Nursing (RN) program. After completing the first year of CPN coursework, students may take the Nurse Aide Competency Examination and earn certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).

CUNY Hostos Community College

The south Bronx is home to CUNY Hostos Community College. The college offers a 45.5-credit-hour CPN program, which may be completed in three-semesters of study. In addition to a practical nursing curriculum, students complete liberal arts courses. While enrolled in the program, students learn to care for patients of all ages and in a variety of settings. Students are eligible to sit for the NCLEX-PN exam upon completing the program. Individuals, who successfully complete the CPN program, pass the NCLEX-PN and ACT exam, and complete RN prerequisite courses, may transfer into the Associate of Applied Science in Registered Nursing.

CUNY LaGuardia Community College

CUNY LaGuardia Community College is located in Long Island City, and the college provides a 29-credit-hour CPN program. Students are required to complete math and science courses before beginning the clinical phase of the certificate program. Applicants to the program must possess a high school diploma or GED and must pass the CUNY ACT placement exam. The college offers a CPN preparatory program, which prepares students for the rigorous curriculum of the CPN program. Lastly, the CPN program is full-time program requiring 10 months to complete. Upon completion of the CPN program students are eligible to take the NCLEX-PN exam.

CUNY Medgar Evers College

Brooklyn's CUNY Medgar Evers College offers a 39-credit-hour CPN program. Admission into the program requires students to complete placement testing in math, writing, and science. In addition, students must pass the nursing pre-entrance exam and interview with the Department of Nursing before being accepted into the program. Furthermore, students must possess current certification in CPR and basic life support before applying to the CPN program. Students that complete the program are eligible for the NCLEX-PN exam.

Niagara County Community College

Based in Sanborn, the college provides a one year CPN program, which prepares students for licensure as a practical nurse and the NCLEX-PN exam. Students who complete the certificate program may continue studies at the college and complete the registered nursing program, with one additional year of study. The certificate program offers clinical experiences in local health care facilities, hospitals, and community centers. Students must pass assessment exams in math, writing, and science, as well as hold basic life support certification before applying to the CPN program. Additionally, students must submit a health physical and various immunization records before enrolling in nursing courses.

North Country Community College

Saranac Lake's North Country Community College offers a two-semester full-time CPN program. Students, who complete the CPN program may apply for the school's associate's degree program in nursing. After completing the program, students are eligible to sit for the NCLEX-PN and obtain licensure as a practical nurse. The school is accredited by the New York Board of Nursing.

Suffolk County Community College

Selden-based Suffolk County Community College offers a CPN certificate program, as well as a CPN to RN associates's degree program. The 37-credit-hour CPN certificate program is typically completed within one year, including a summer session. Suffolk County Community College has 10 nursing labs and a nursing club. Also, local area hospitals, nursing homes, and health care agencies provide clinical learning experience opportunities throughout Suffolk County. Upon completion of the CPN programs, students are eligible to sit for the NCLEX-PN exam. Students who obtained a CPN certificate through the college, and continue studies into the RN associate's degree program receive advanced placement into the RN degree program.

SUNY College of Technology at Canton

SUNY College of Technology at Canton provides a 36-credit-hour CPN program. Courses include pharmacology, human anatomy, writing, and psychology. Clinical experience is provided in hospitals, long-term care facilities, and community agencies throughout northern New York state. Students must meet minimum course or assessment exam requirements in writing, reading, biology, algebra, and chemistry in order to be considered for acceptance into the CPN program. The admission application deadline is February 1st. Students completing the program are eligible to take the NCLEX-PN exam.

SUNY Westchester Community College

Located in Valhalla, the college offers a 47-credit-hour CPN program. Upon completion of the CPN program students are eligible to sit for the NCLEX-PN exam and apply for licensure as a licensed practical nurse. Students are required to pass a physical examination and health clearance prior to starting the program, as well as pass a criminal background check and drug test prior to starting clinical coursework. The application deadline for the CPN program is February 15.

Trocaire College

Buffalo's Trocaire College provides a 48-credit-hour CPN program. Clinical experience is administered in various western New York hospitals and health care agencies. Students, not already holding a valid CPR certification, are required to obtain CPR certification within the first week of classes. Upon completion of the CPN program students are eligible to sit for the NCLEX-PN exam. Curriculum, includes liberal arts core courses as well as nursing program courses.
