Comparison of LPN Schools in NYC

Several schools in the greater NYC area offer practical nursing certificate programs that meet New York state licensing requirements. Hostos Community College in the Bronx, part of the City University of New York (CUNY) system, requires practical nursing students to take several courses from the college's liberal arts offerings. LaGuardia Community College, a CUNY school in Long Island City, has a practical nursing certificate program, along with a related bridge program that allows LPNs to become registered nurses (RNs) and a registered nursing degree program. At another CUNY school, Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, the practical nursing certificate can be the first step in a three-part education plan culminating in a bachelor's degree in nursing.

Certificate Program at Hostos Community College

Practical nursing students at Eugenio Maria de Hostos Community College complete 27 general education credits and 18.5 nursing credits during the four-semester program.

Certificate in Practical Nursing

Entrance to the practical nursing program at Hostos is competitive; applicants must obtain acceptable scores on entrance exams as well as passing criminal background checks and health screenings. The first two semesters of study include courses in psychology, English composition, anatomy, math for health professionals and ethnicity health and illness. In semesters three and four, students complete courses in nursing theory and methods, study pharmacology and learn through supervised clinical experiences at area healthcare facilities.

Certificate Program at LaGuardia Community College

This CUNY school is located near Queens in Long Island City. Students have the opportunity to take advantage of the transfer agreements that LaGuardia has with over 70 schools; these agreements can assist them if they want to pursue their education at a four-year institution. All of the nursing programs are housed in the Health Sciences Department.

Practical Nursing Certificate Program

This 48-credit program includes 29 credits in areas such as nutrition, pharmacology, medical surgery nursing, mental health nursing and pediatric nursing. Upon completing their coursework, students will begin the clinical phase of the program, which should take about one year. Once the clinical practicums are finished, students will be eligible to obtain state licensure as LPNs.

Certificate Program at Medgar Evers College

The certificate program in practical nursing at Medgar Evers College is three semesters and requires 18 months to complete. The program is offered in the daytime, and full-time attendance is required once the student is admitted to the clinical phase of the program.

Practical Nursing Certificate

Students must pass entrance exams and complete basic skills courses before being admitted to the practical nursing program. Classes cover the fundamentals of nursing, and students gain practical skills through working in the school's simulation lab. They get supervised hands-on experience at area healthcare facilities and work with pediatric, obstetric and mental health patients. The certificate program also includes a review course that prepares students for the National Council Licensure Exam for Practical Nursing (NCLEX-PN).
